Rambus and Kingston Develop Threaded DDR3 Modules

Every-so-often we see Rambus pop back on the radar and this time it could be a real eye-opener. Rambus has teamed up with Kingston to develop some threaded DDR3 memory modules and their initial prototypes seem to be performing quite well! 50% more throughput with 20% less power is going to catch the attention of many in the industry!

Based on standard DDR3 chips, the new threading tech essentially creates multiple independent channels per memory module, allowing multicore processors to utilize the available RAM more efficiently. That results, says Rambus, in systems that offer 50 percent higher throughput that the standard stuff and suckle 20 percent less power due to the compartmentalization of each module. Neat. More details are promised at the Intel Developer Conference, which kicks off tomorrow in San Fran.

September 21 News from Around the Web

HIS Radeon HD 4890 iCooler x4 1GB Video Card @ TweakTown and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

“Recently we've seen more and more companies begin to mix up the HD 4890 quite a bit. Be it big overclocks, new coolers or both, we're seeing more of the card now than we did in recent months. What makes this so interesting, though, is that the new HD 5800 series which is designed to take over where the HD 4800 leaves off is ready to come out.

Today we'll be looking at a HD 4890 from HIS which comes under the iCooler x4 name. Since this is a series we haven't looked at before, we're pretty sure that it carries with it a new cooler. HIS tends to offer a pretty good cooler when they move outside the box, so hopefully this time is no different. Let's have a look at the package before we have a closer look at the card itself and its spec before checking out the performance.”

Intels Negotiations With PC Makers: the Emails

The European Union on Monday published e-mail excerpts (see the related article or full 500-page report) aiming to back up its claims that Intel pressured chip buyers into choosing microprocessors from Intel over smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices. Here are some excerpts, as stated by the Commission:

[Acer Senior Executive]] indicated to me that Acer participation was compromised by the extremely specific request from Intel to avoid any public support to AMD64 and Athlon 64 [chip]. He volunteered to tell me that this is the first time he has ever seen [Intel Senior Executive] PERSONALLY intervene in such a matter (). The threat to Acer was described to me as not completely defined yet but could be as drastic as 100% suppression of their Intel marketing funds. [Acer Senior Executive] indicated that with 85% of their business coming from Intel, the damage to Acer would be significant. Thus, although he reassured me of his commitment to the relationship, and the long term success of AMD64, he told me that Acer is reviewing what compromise they can reach to still support us yet satisfy Intels ultimatum.

Toshiba and SanDisk reportedly to begin sub-30nm NAND flash production

Toshiba and its NAND flash partner SanDisk reportedly plan to begin mass producing NAND flash chips fabricated on 20nm-class process technology in the second half of 2010, according to industry sources. In line with the technology migration, SanDisk and Toshiba's joint-venture manufacturing facilities in Yokkaichi (Mie prefecture, Japan) is expected to ramp up its monthly capacity to around 200,000 wafers.

Toshiba, which recently started mass production of 3-bit per cell (3bpc) 32nm devices, originally expected 32nm to account for over 50%of the total output from the Yokkaichi operations by the end of 2009, the sources said. But the ramp-up reportedly has been behind schedule, the sources added. Rival group Intel and Micron Technology have said they expect to introduce 2xnm technology later in 2009, according to previous reports. Mass production of their 32Gb NAND flash memory using 3bpc 34nm process technology is on track to take place at the two companies' joint venture IM Flash Technologies.
