Today, AMD is announcing a new flagship processor, the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. This is nothing more than a speed bump for the Dragon platform, but all of these speed bumps are starting to add up and the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor runs at an impressive 3.4GHz. The performance should scale predictably and the price of the Phenom II X4 965 BE will be $245, which is what the Phenom II X4 955 was back in May 2009 when it first launched.

With the CPU voltage increased to 1.475V in the BIOS we were able to hit 4.2GHz after raising the multiplier up to x21 from x17. This is an overclock of 800MHz, which is a great overclock for using air cooling. This is about 300MHz higher than we got the Phenom II X4 955 processor when we reviewed it a few months ago.

Intel moving to 32nm ‘Sandy Bridge’ microarchitecture

Intel is scheduled to introduce its 32nm 'Sandy Bridge' microarchitecture, which will succeed Nehalem and Westmere, in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to sources at PC makers. Intel plans to let 45nm Nehalem-based CPUs co-exist with 32nm Westmere-based CPUs before Sandy Bridge appears, indicating that Intel has no plans to launch quad-core Westmere CPUs for desktops or notebooks.

Intel is set to volume produce new Westmere chips based on 32nm manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2009, and is on track to ship Clarkdale for desktops and Arrandale for notebooks in first-quarter 2010 followed by the launch of its six-core Gulftown CPUs in the second quarter. Pricing of the six-core Gulftown CPUs is expected to reach as high as US$1,499 in thousand-unit tray quantities.
