Winbond set to exit standard DRAM business, to add GDDR line

Winbond Electronics plans to lower its sales proportion from standard DRAM to 10% in 2010, and gradually phase out the business, according to company president Tung-Yi Chan. The Taiwan-based memory chipmaker has recently announced a plan to enter a product transfer and technology licensing agreement with Qimonda for graphics DDR (GDDR) chips.

GDDR will also be one of Winbond's focused product lines, in addition to specialty DRAM, mobile RAM and NOR flash, said Chan. Winbond has seen the combined sales proportion from niche memory reach 50%, followed by standard DRAM with 30% and NOR flash with 20%.

Chinese Teen Beaten To Death At Internet Addiction Camp

Internet addiction is a controversial topic, its very existence is debated, but that hasn’t stopped China from classifying ten million teens (about 10 percent of all teenagers) as Internet addicts. Treatment camps for the affliction have sprung up in China, but the reported tactics and methods of the doctors are often questionable. Last Sunday, 16 year-old Deng Senshan was beaten to death by his three supervisors, allegedly for running too slowly. “My son was very healthy and was not a criminal,” the boy’s father,

Microsoft Courts iPhone Developers for WinMo Work

Microsoft, obviously noting the sheer number of apps being written for the iPhone (and not Windows Mobile) has decided to take action, and try to convince developers that the “more mobile platforms, the better.” It’s written a case study on how to port from the iPhone to Windows Mobile 6.5. Now, Windows Mobile 6.5 has been seen by many as a stopgap release of WinMo, which is only being released at all because Windows Mobile 7 has been delayed for too long (and they can’t keep relying on WM 6.1). At the same

August 5 News from Around the Web

NZXT Beta Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

“Wow, the NZXT Beta sure has taken me on a wild ride. I like the looks of the Beta. There are better looking cases out there, but none for this price. Even so, the Beta is sleek and stylish. I love that NZXT has painted the interior, and the paint they used is of high quality. The meshed 5.25″ drive bay covers are a nice feature and, coupled with the 1/4″ foam for air filtration, really put the Beta ahead in potential. I would like to see every vendor start using these covers. Although there is only one 120mm fan included, it is of high quality and can easily compare to some of the retail fans available. It would be nice to see at least one more fan included for exhaust on the rear vent, but at such a low price, you could pick one up at any retailer or e-tailor pretty easily. The two 120mm vents on the side panel leave open a huge window of opportunity. Personally I think it would be a great spot to mount a 2x120mm radiator for watercooling using the 2 pre-drilled holes in the back.”

Mystery Product Appears Again in iPhone Beta SDK

In March it was noted (by many) that the iPhone OS 3.0 beta SDK contained a reference in a file, /System/Library/AppleUSBDevice/USBDeviceConfiguration.plist to “iProd0,1,” sort of a mystery device. The latest beta update for iPhone OS 3.1 similarly includes a reference to iProd. However, the USBConfiguration.plist file now has the string “iProd1,1.” Typically “1,1” is used by Apple when it releases first-generation products, like “iPhone1,1” for the original iPhone. The new string was revealed to Ars Technica
