AMD Ships ‘Istanbul’ Six-Core Opteron Server CPU

We aren’t quite calling this the turnaround of the decade just yet, but with just six months to go until 2010, AMD is doing its best to make a late run for said crown. In years past, Advanced Micro Devices had become notorious for delaying products. Now, they’re doing their best to right the ship by unveiling a product’s availability some five months ahead of schedule. In CPU years, five months is an eternity. The new six-core AMD Opteron (codenamed “Istanbul”) is shipping out to OEM customers today, and

Gigabyte Computex 2009 – innovative motherboards coming

GIGABYTE will showcase their latest range of innovative motherboards featuring GIGABYTE's 24-phase power VRM design and Smart 6 technologies at Computex 2009. Also on offer will be a sneak peek at various motherboard models featuring the highly anticipated Intel P55 chipset series, as well as the GA-MA785G-UD3H based on the exciting AMD 785G chipset.

The first of its kind, GIGABYTE's proprietary 24-phase power VRM is designed to enhance efficiency of power delivery to the CPU while reducing heat essentially by spreading the workload over the 24 power phases. Other key features of the VRM include the use of only the highest caliber components to provide the most reliable and durable high-performance motherboards. The new technologies that are being unveiled are not only limited to hardware; GIGABYTE will also introduce smarter computing with its Smart 6 Technologies that have been designed with user-friendliness in mind. They include SMART QuickBoot, SMART Recorder, SMART TimeLock, SMART Recovery, SMART QuickBoost and SMART DualBIOS for easier, smarter PC system management.

AMD Athlon II X2 250 And Phenom II X2 550 CPUs Get Priced

AMD is planning to launch two new dual-core processors during ComputeX 2009, the Athlon II X2 250 and Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition. If that is true it means the launch is only hours away!!

The Athlon II X2 250 based on Regor core works at 3.0GHz, and features 1MB L2 cache per core. With built-in DDR2/DDR3 memory controller, the TDP is 65W. The best of all is it will sell at $87, which is really affordable. The Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition based on Calisto core runs at 3.1GHz and features 6MB L3 cache and 2512KB L2. This multiplier unlocked CPU with 80W TDP is priced at $102.

Chip sales forecast improved for 2009, says Gartner

Worldwide semiconductor revenues are forecast to reach US$198 billion in 2009, a 22.4% decline from 2008 revenues of US$255 billion, according to Gartner. This outlook is slightly better than the first-quarter projections, when Gartner forecast the revenues to slide 24.1% in 2009.

“We are expecting 4.9% growth in second-quarter semiconductor sales based on recent semiconductor company guidance, and this positive movement has caused us to move away from our 1Q09 worst-case scenario of a record down year in 2009,” Lewis said. “While this is positive news, the semiconductor industry is clearly not out of the woods, as there is minimal evidence that demand is returning, except in China.”

June 1 News from Around the Web

Eee PC spotted running Android + Qualcomm 1GHz CPU @ TweakTown and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

“The machine was installed with Googles upcoming Android operating system and we have to admit, it felt a bit strange on a Smartbook (as Qualcomm calls them) of this kind. The operating system is clearly suited for smaller devices and smart phones, but it was nice to get a look at it anyway. Operation was rather smooth and everything worked, albeit just a bit plain.

We asked one of the product managers from Qualcomm to give us a demo of the system. It is based on Qualcomms Snapdragon platform which consists of a 1GHz CPU. Because of the platforms extremely low power consumption, no cooling is required which allows for ultra thin netbooks. It is capable of playing back 720p video with the current gen chips, and in the future 1080p will be supported with the faster clock processors.”

Gigabyte’s AMD 785G Motherboad Pictured – GA-MA785GPM-UDH2

A picture of the very first ATI/AMD 785G motherboard has been taken and it's of the Gigabyte GA-MA785GPM-UDH2 motherboard!!

Gigabyte GA-MA785GPM-UDH2 Motherboard

The Gigabyte GA-MA785GPM-UDH2 motherboard uses the AMD 785G for the north bridge and the new 710 south bridge for the chipsets. This particular board is DDR2 based and has the socket AM2+ on it. If you look at the silk screening on the motherboard you can also see that it supports four channels of DDR2 memory with BIOS support for up to 1200MHz support, the now famous Ultra-Durable 3 design that enthusiasts love for durability, the 2oz copper PCB layers, a single x16 PCI Express slot, and dual BIOS support. Not bad for a micro-ATX form factor!! Now if we just knew what pricing was on this little bad boy.
