Intel outlines notebook plans for 2H09

Intel recently outlined its plans for traditional notebook, CULV-based ultra-thin notebook and netbook product lines for its partners, according to sources at notebook makers. Intel's next-generation Calpella notebook platform will launch as scheduled in the third quarter 2009 and targeting models in the 14.0-, 15.6-, 17.1- and 18.4-inch segments at retail prices of above US$1,200 initially for high-end market. Meanwhile, Intel will also reduce the price of the Montevina platform to clear out inventory.

Due to the low market demand, Intel is considering phasing out Atom N280 and GN40 chipset combination for netbooks and will leave the Atom N270 and 945GSE chipset to play the key role until September this year. The Atom N270 and 945GSE chipset combination will start to be phase out of the market in September and will be replaced by the next-generation Atom CPU (Pineview) and (Tiger Point) chipset. The new platform will target the 10-inch netbook segment with prices ranging between US$399-599. Intel has also designed a standard 8.9-inch netbook for white-box vendors. Specifications include Intel's Atom N270 CPU, 945GSE chipset, 512MB memory, and 8GB or 16GB flash-based storage. The systems will run on Moblin v2.

Asus Debuts P6T7 WS SuperComputer Motherboard

Calling this motherboard one fit for a “supercomputer” is probably stretching things, but we’ve no doubt that Asus’ latest mainboard is built for serious abuse. The P6T7 WS SuperComputer Workstation Motherboard (catch all that?) is billed as the “most revolutionary and powerful Parallel Computing solution available to date.” The board is equipped with seven (yes, seven!) PCI-Express Gen2 x16 slots and is certified for NVIDIA Tesla GPU computing. Specifically, it’ll handle up to three Tesla cards and one NVIDIA

EC Ruling: Statement by Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini

Paul Otellini, Intel Corporation president and CEO today issued the following statement regarding the European Commission decision on Intel's business practices: “Intel takes strong exception to this decision. We believe the decision is wrong and ignores the reality of a highly competitive microprocessor marketplace characterized by constant innovation, improved product performance and lower prices. There has been absolutely zero harm to consumers. Intel will appeal.”

We do not believe our practices violated European law. The natural result of a competitive market with only two major suppliers is that when one company wins sales, the other does not. The Directorate General for Competition of the Commission ignored or refused to obtain significant evidence that contradicts the assertions in this decision. We believe this evidence shows that when companies perform well the market rewards them, when they don't perform the market acts accordingly.

Intel fined record $1.45 bln by Europe’s antitrust regulator

The European Competition Commission on Wednesday fined chip maker Intel Corp. a record 1.06 billion euros ($1.45 billion) for abusing its dominance of the market to squeeze out rival Advanced Micro Devices. E.U. regulators first began investigating Intel in 2001 after AMD filed a complaint a year before.

“Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years,” European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement. The fine is the highest ever imposed by the regulator and represents 4.15% of Intel's 2008 turnover. The U.S. chip maker immediately said it would appeal.

HP, Dell, Apple Owners Combine NVIDIA Lawsuits

Five different lawsuits, from owners of Apple, Dell and HP laptops have combined their lawsuits against NVIDIA over defective GPUs that were shipped in possibly millions of computers. In some cases, OEMs have modified the BIOS in an attempt to keep the GPUs from overheating, but the change reduces battery life and performance. NVIDIA admitted to issues earlier in July 2008, in and SEC filing, when it said it was taking a $150 – $200 million charge to cover (emphasis ours): … anticipated customer warranty,

AMD Breaks 1GHz GPU Barrier With Radeon HD 4890

We always knew this day would come, but we certainly wouldn’t have guessed May 13th, 2009. At any rate, AMD has today proudly announced the planet’s first 1GHz graphics processor (without third-party / user overclocking, of course) with the ATI Radeon HD 4890 GPU. If you’ll recall, we actually benchmarked the standard 850MHz version early last month, and just two weeks ago PowerColor introduced a version with a 950MHz core clock speed.Beginning now, however, users with a lust for raw horsepower can sink their

Intel Fined A Record $1.45 Billion By EU

Boy, those suits in the European Union sure know how to dish out the fines. Just over a year after the EU ordered Microsoft to pay fines totaling $1.3 billion for withholding critical information from developers, the same entity has come forward and slapped Intel with a record-setting fine of $1.45 billion. Talk about unceremonious record breaking! The report states that Intel has been found guilty of “offering improper rebates and other discounts to discourage companies from buying microprocessors from its smaller
