Beginning this June, NVIDIA will be introducing NVISION, the magazine that celebrates and examines the world of digital graphics in entertainment. If you sign up and pay for a year right now you will get your first issue free. Don't get used to it being free though as the year will still cost you $19.97 for 4 issues. Te magazine has 116 pages and almost no ads according to the subscription page. I guess that with NVISION 09 being canceled this was the second best thing, but NVISION 08 seemed like it had promise.

In-World Tasers Earn Second Life a Lawsuit

A virtual world, but a real lawsuit. Taser International has sued Linden Labs, creator of the virtual world Second Life, for $75,000. The reason: in-world tasers. According to Bloomberg, Taser, which manufactures the well-known stun games, filed a 102-page complaint asserting that Linden Labs is damaging the company’s reputation and hurting its sales by allowing virtual weapons to be sold online under the Taser brand name. Massively got a look at the complaint, and put together a pretty detailed analysis of

The App Store Passes One Billion Downloads

Move over, McDonald’s; Apple is gaining on you!  On Thursday, the App Store reached one billion downloads. Apple thanked we consumers for the downloads, and now we’re on to the next billion, right? Palm can only hope that its upcoming App Catalog will be even slightly as successful. The fact that the Palm Pre will be exclusive to Sprint for quite some time is a negative, as is the CDMA technology behind the Pre. You have to bet that Palm has a GSM version in the works, though. About that promotional contest?

Microsoft sales fall for first time in its 23 years

Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that declining PC sales hurt revenue, as the software giant reported quarterly sales that fell for the first time in its 23-year history as a public company. The Redmond, Wash.-based company said sales fell 6% from a year earlier to $13.7 billion, missing analysts' expectations of $14.1 billion.

Results included charges totaling 6 cents per share for job cuts and investments that took place in the quarter. Without the charges, Microsoft earned 39 per share, in line with forecasts by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, which typically exclude one-time items. Microsoft said weakness in the global PC market negatively impacted its results. Still, shares of Microsoft rose 4% after hours, as the company performed roughly in-line with expectations. In the previous quarter, results came in well below forecasts, and Microsoft rescinded its prior outlook for 2009.

Yahoo Pulls the Plug on GeoCities

A few days after Yahoo announced it would lay off nearly 700 workers, Yahoo is shutting down GeoCities, which it acquired in 1999 for $4 billion. GeoCities is the latest casualty in Chief Executive Carol Bartz’s campaign to close duplicative and underperforming products. Last week, Yahoo announced the closing of Jumpcut, an online video-editing service, and FareChase, a travel Web site. During Yahoo’s earnings call on Tuesday, Bartz also mentioned the discontinuation of Yahoo Briefcase, My Web, Yahoo Audio Search,

Samsung Ramps Up DDR3 Memory Production

Intel’s new Xeon 5500 series CPU launched earlier this year within Apple’s Mac Pro (of all systems), and has since filtered out to other computer makers and the retail market. Despite an overall contraction in demand for microprocessors, demand for this particular one has evidently remained strong. So strong, in fact, that Samsung Electronics is ramping up its 50 nanometer class production of DDR3 memory chips in response to increased demand stemming from the chip’s debut.According to Samsung, DDR3 enables OEMs
