IBM breaks off talks to buy Sun Microsystems

By withdrawing its offer to buy Sun Microsystems on Sunday, IBM has left the future uncertain for a pioneering but struggling Silicon Valley tech company. Still, the talks may not be over.

After extensive negotiations, the two tech giants had appeared close to finalizing a deal for about $7 billion at the end of last week. But IBM lowered its offer and then withdrew it Sunday, after Sun balked at the price and terms of the sale, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

Gigabyte negotiating supply to white-box netbook makers in China

Gigabyte Technology has recently revealed plans to cut into the white-box netbook market in China and is currently in supply-negotiations with three major local white-box netbook vendors, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

The company expects the negotiations to be completed by the end of the second quarter, and the deals are estimated to triple the company's notebook shipments from last year's 150,000 units to 500,000 units in 2009, added the paper.
