A-DATA Announces SATAII SSD 300 Plus

A-DATA has been on a surefire roll of late with new introductions in its flash memory family, and it seems that roll isn’t stopping today. Shortly after delivering a 512GB 2.5″ XPG SSD, the company has now introduced a slightly less high-end model that’s half as roomy but still exceptionally fast. The 2.5″ SATAII SSD 300 Plus features an all new controller and a special mobile SDRAM module that purportedly makes it quite the speed demon compared to traditional SSDs. For instance, the new drive increases data

Lightning Flash Charging, Courtesy of MIT

A group of MIT engineers have developed a new way of building lithium-ion batteries that could lead to smaller, lighter, and more efficient power packs. What’s really exciting is that these new li-ion batteries can charge in a matter of seconds rather than hours. We all use li-ion powered devices regularly. Cell phones, laptops, and even electronic cars can be powered by these types of batteries. Today’s li-ion batteries are pretty good at storing large amounts of power, but they’re also slow at gaining and

Windows Mobile 6.5 Skin Offers a Taste of the Future

One of the main criticisms of the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system is that it’s little more than WM6.1 with an updated skin.  We hope there are changes under the hood as well, but if you subscribe to the nothin’ but skin point-of-view and want a little WinMo65 action without the wait, a poster at the xda developers’ forum has you covered.

The Windows Mobile 6.5 Skin gives your Windows Mobile device a next-gen facelift.  The only requirements are that your device has a QVGA touchscreen display (VGA/WVGA is not yet supported) and that you have Spb Mobile Shell 2.1.5 installed (which requires Windows Mobile 5 or 6).  The skin is designed for Mobile Shell, which isn’t free, but you can grab it here if you don’t already use it.

Habey’s Mini HTPC Can Handle 1080p and Blu-ray

During our recent time with Asus’ Eee PC 1000HE, we tried playing back a 1080p movie trailer just for kicks. To our surprise, it did manage to stutter along and get through it, but it was far from “watchable.” And that was with an Atom N280 within. Now, we’re seeing a diminutive new media PC with Intel’s aging 1.6GHz Atom N270 that can reportedly handle 1,920 x 1,080 high definition material — which just has to be a joke, right? Not quite. Habey’s unique BIS-6550HD, which has undoubtedly put the company on the

National Semiconductor Cutting 1,725 jobs

National Semiconductor said Wednesday it will slash about a quarter of its worldwide workforce because of fast slumping sales and profit. And the situation isn't getting better. The company said it expects its fourth quarter sales to be down 5 percent to 10 percent from the third quarter due to the recession.

The Santa Clara chipmaker said it will close two manufacturing plants and cut 1,725 jobs. About 330 Santa Clara employees will be laid off, bringing the company's workforce here to 1,220, said spokeswoman LuAnn Jenkins. It was the second lay-off announcement the company has made recently. It disclosed on Nov. 12 that it was laying off 330 workers, including about 150 in Santa Clara.
