TSMC To Produce Intel Atom Processors in 4Q09 at the Earliest

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to enter production of Atom-core system-on-chip (SoC) solutions in the fourth quarter of 2009 at the earliest, according to industry sources. IP vendor ARM has said that its long-term collaboration with TSMC should not be affected by the foundry's new partnership with rival Intel. Intel and TSMC on Tuesday announced a strategic partnership for the US chipmaker's Atom SoCs, but details concerning the partnership, such as production schedule, were not revealed.

Tudor Brown, president of the UK-based IP vendor, told Digitimes in a phone interview that it came as no surprise that Intel chose to tie up with TSMC. Since lowering the manufacturing cost has become a major issue with semiconductor suppliers to tackle the current economic environment, Intel has to look for a more cost-competitive manufacturing partner, he said.

Asus P6T6 WS Revolution Core i7 Motherboard

When we think about what is perhaps the one draw-back that enthusiasts and gamers could point to with respect to an Intel chipset-based motherboard historically, it was lack of NVIDIA SLI multi-GPU support. Though you could drop more than one AMD ATI Radeon-based graphics card into a P45, X38 or X48-chipset based motherboard, for the most part, SLI was a no-go, save perhaps for a few custom OEM solutions. This wasn’t too much of a problem for gaming purists that wanted in on NVIDIA powered multi-GPU action,

Sprint Puts a Price on Friendship

Sprint has been facing hard times of late, and is looking for the Palm Pre to boost their sales. What to do until then, hmmm? Well, they’ve initiated a referral program, whereby you can try to sucker, er, get your friends to sign up for Sprint before the Palm Pre launches. The program only lasts until 3/31. Strangely, the fine print says: “Accounts are limited to 12 referrals per year.” You mean in the rest of the month? Perhaps they are looking to continue the program after this month if things go well. Referrers

NVIDIA Announces GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M GPUs

NVIDIA today introduced GPUs in four separate categories that push performance to the highest levels ever achieved in enthusiast and high-performance notebooks. Included in the group is the fastest notebook GPU in the market, the GeForce GTX 280M, with up to 50% more performance than previous generation enthusiast notebook GPUs.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX280M

GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M Series GPUs make playing the latest HD games on a portable platform a reality by delivering blistering frame rates that are up to 50% faster than the previous generation products they are replacing, all without increasing overall power consumption. Using NVIDIA SLI technology, which enables close to double the graphics performance over a single GPU, two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs can be paired to offer the fastest notebook graphics solution available today. In order to enable a quiet state and to increase battery life, NVIDIA HybridPower technology can dynamically power down the powerful discreet GPU and transfer graphics operation to the integrated GPU for applications that do not require the high level of graphics horsepower.
