Prolimatech Megahalems LGA 775 and LAG 1366 Cooler – Prolimatech may be a new name to many computer hardware cooling enthusiasts. It is a new company with a lofty goal. Prolimatech claims to have built a CPU cooler worthy of taking on the King of the Hill in what it calls a Megahalems. We see if that is so on a new LGA 1366 test setup.
Palm Quakes as Apple Gets Its MultiTouch Patent
To all of you who wondered if Apple indeed had the patents to back up its thinly veiled threats against Palm regarding the multi-touch feature of the iPhone and iPod Touch: it appears the answer is yes. On January 20th, 2009, Apple was awarded patent number 7,479,949 which appears to cover much of the iPhone’s multi-touch user interface. Apple’s earnings conference call was January 21st, the day after the patent was awarded. Small wonder that COO Tim Cook should say the following during the call (emphasis ours):
Firefox Mobile Windows Mobile Beta Coming Next Week
The first Firefox Mobile beta for Windows Mobile could come as soon as next week.
On Mozilla’s Fennec (the code-name for Firefox Mobile) notes page for January 26, developers state that they are “targeting a Milestone release for the first week of February.” The page goes on to state that the first beta will be targeted for the HTC Touch Pro (also sold in the U.S. as the AT&T Fuze).
This comes as a welcome surprise as previous reports had the first WinMo beta of Fennec scheduled for March or April.
AMD Dashes Hopes For Proper Geode Successor
Advanced Micro Devices has decided it best to focus its resources on more mainstream chips during these volatile economic times, which means less time will be allotted for researching the aging Geode. And by “less time,” we mean “no time.”According to AMD spokesman Phil Hughes: “There are no plans for a follow-on product to today’s available AMD Geode LX products, but we expect to make this very successful processor available to customers as long as the market demands.” For those having a difficult time comprehending
Senate approves delay for DTV transition
Months of “the sky is falling!” news stories have all led up to this: the Senate today voted unanimously to postpone the transition from analog to digital television from Feb. 17 to June 12.Apparently, according to the Nielsen Co., more than 6.5 million households in the U.S. that rely on analog television – the old-fashioned kind that comes through an antenna, rather than a digital cable box – would be unprepared for the changeover and would lose all television reception if the date were not to be pushed back. The
DRAM Maker Qimonda Files For Insolvency
As with most every other sector, the DRAM market has been struggling of late. Interestingly enough, it’s expected that a recent departure from the arena could actually ease some of the pain for everyone else involved. Germany’s Qimonda, which has been labeled the planet’s fifth-largest DRAM vendor, currently controls about 10 percent of the entire market. Or, at least it did before filing for insolvency just days ago. Now, there stands a chance that the 10 percent gap will either be covered by rivals, or — possibly
Verizon Intros $250 In-Home Network Extender
Sprint already won the race to market with its AIRAVE, but it’s Verizon Wireless’ Network Extender that seems to be the better overall deal. For those unaware, a femtocell is — for all intents and purposes — a miniature cell tower that connects to your broadband Internet. Once installed, it gives you impeccable at-home coverage by routing mobile calls that originate in your home through the Internet. Sure beats climbing up to that one window in your attic to eke out a single bar, doesn’t it?Starting this week,
