Windows Mobile 6.5, SkyBox, SkyMarket at MWC?

According to Neowin, Microsoft will take the wraps off a new version of Windows Mobile, an over-the-air syncing service and an on-device software store at next month’s Mobile World Conference (MWC).

Windows Mobile 6.5 has long been expected to debut at MWC, and Neowin confirms that this is likely to happen and also says those leaked WM6.5 screenshots (seen left) that we first saw in November are, in fact, reflective of the new OS.

SkyBox is a wireless syncing service somewhat similar to Apple’s MobileMe.  With SkyBox you can sync your Windows Mobile handset’s contacts, email, photos, calendar entries, etc., with Microsoft Cloud-based services.  We’re not exactly sure how this will work, but such a service would be a great addition to the OS.  Neowin reports that SkyBox may also work with non-Windows Mobile devices.

SkyMarket will be a mobile marketplace for Windows Mobile applications, allowing users to find and install third-party software right from their handheld.

You should, of course, treat this information as rumor until it is confirmed by another source or until MWC gets going in February.

Intel cuts prices on some chips up to 48 percent

On Sunday, Intel instituted broad price cuts on processors, spanning the Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, Pentium dual-core, Celeron, and Xeon product lines.

Cuts were concentrated on quad-core chips like the Q9650 (3.00GHz), reduced 40 percent, to $316 from $530. But Celeron processors received some of the largest reductions. The mobile Celeron 570 (2.00GHz), was slashed 48 percent, to $70 from $134, for example. Some Xeon processors also received hefty cuts. The price on the X3370 (3.00GHz), for instance, was cut 40 percent to $316 from $530.

AMD to cut 1,100 workers, 9 percent of staff

Advanced Micro Devices plans to cut 1,100 jobs, 9 percent of its global staff, and slash the remaining employees' pay as the chip maker hopes its third round of layoffs in a year can help it get through a brutal market for computer sales. The Sunnyvale company said Friday that 900 workers will have their positions cut. The rest of the reductions are coming from attrition and the previously announced sale of a business unit.

The company has 15,000 workers, but it is spinning off its manufacturing operations, which have 3,000 employees who are not affected by Friday's announcement. So AMD's cut of 1,100 jobs amounts to 9 percent of the remaining 12,000 workers. The dismissals represent AMD's third round of major layoffs in the last year. AMD cut 600 workers just last month, and earlier in 2008 jettisoned 1,600.

Intel to target ultra-portable notebook market with CULV platform

Intel plans to push a new consumer ultra-low voltage (CULV) platform into the market for ultra-portable notebooks priced between US$699-899 in the second quarter of 2009. The move is believed to be targeting AMD's new Yukon platform, according to sources at notebook makers. The top-three notebook vendors are already preparing to launch products based on the new platform and are expected to help CULV-based notebook shipments reach 10 million units this year, noted the sources.

For 2009, Intel plans to divide the notebook market into four segments: 12.1-inch and above traditional notebooks, Atom or Pineview-based netbooks, Menlow-based mobile Internet devices (MIDs), and ultra-portable notebooks with a display size between 11.x- to 13.3-inch. In additional news, Hewlett-Packard (HP) was originally reported to be planning an Atom Zxx (Menlow)-based 13.3-inch notebook for its Mini-note line in June this year, but has recently decided to use the new CULV platform for the 13.3-inch notebook under the insistence of Intel, added the sources.

Google’s Latest Experiment: Preferred Sites

Searching via Google can be as much art as it is science. Yes, you can simply input what you are searching for and hope that some relevant results pop up somewhere in the first few ranked results. But when your search topic is somewhat obscure, complicated, or even too broad, you often have to tailor your search by carefully selecting which words to include and which ones to leave out. For true power-searches, Google’s Advanced Search operators are a must. Google has just launched a new feature, designed to

Wozniak on Jobs: His Privacy and Health

Steve Wozniak, the “other Steve” that people associate with Apple, but not in the cultish near-godlike way people think of Steve Jobs, appeared on CNBC recently, and was asked about his opinion on Steve Jobs’ health as well as his privacy. Also appearing on the show were Sarah Lacy (Business Week) and Matt Richtel (the New York Times). Lacy indicated in just one question just why the private life of Steve Jobs seems to have reached celebrity status and interest. Lacy:”He is such a part of the value of that stock.

Inauguration To Be Streamed Using Silverlight

But regardless of the plethora of options available, that hasn’t stopped the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) from also promising to host “live and on-demand video streaming of the official inauguration swearing-in ceremony on the PIC Web site.” Perhaps what is most significant about the PIC’s decision to stream the live event online is that it has chosen to do so using Microsoft’s

Cloaking Technology Advances Made, Spock Nervous

There was a time when laser beams were a thing of science fiction and the picture phone just found on episodes of The Jetsons.  And cloaking devices, well let’s just say the Romulans gave James T. and the gang a bit of heart burn with their peek-a-boo ways but in reality the capability, though explored in science fiction throughout the years from Star Trek to Star Wars, seemed pretty far-fetched.  Or is it?  Like the laser and the picture phone now modern day web cam, advances in cloaking
