Yahoo & Intel Team Up for Internet-Enabled TV
Yahoo! and Intel announced that they will premiere their joint Internet-enabled TV prototypes at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Both companies have built a substantial business in the this new media market with their ventures into home connectivity and home theater and see CES as an opportunity to show off their new ventures to the television consumer.
What exactly are they trying to achieve? For Yahoo, it's establishment of the Widget Channel, a software foundation that can house programs for browsing photos, using the Internet's abundant socially connected services, watching YouTube videos, or digging deeper into TV shows–and through which Yahoo will be able to show advertisements. For Intel, it's a foothold in an industry whose microprocessors have typically been cheaper, less powerful, and less power-hungry.

AMD to trim about 600 jobs, 100 more than planned
Advanced Micro Devices, the second-largest producer of personal-computer processors, will cut about 600 jobs, 100 more than previously planned, as it struggles to return to profitability.
The cuts will result in an expense of about $70 million in the fourth quarter, including $34 million from severance costs and the continuation of some employee benefits, the company said Monday in a regulatory filing. Sunnyvale-based AMD said earlier that the job reduction would cost $50 million. The company, on course for its third-straight annual loss this year, is striving to keep up with larger rival Intel as demand for PC chips slumps. Intel has captured market share by adopting newer technologies more quickly.
