Tomorrow’s Chips To Stack Cores Vertically
When microprocessor manufacturers ran into increasing complications as they tried to make chips runs faster, they shifted gears, and started building more powerful processors using multiple cores. We’re still at the early part of the multi-core revolution, but researchers at the University of Rochester claim that microprocessor manufacturers will eventually run into similar challenges with today’s multi-core processor design because of the “limits of miniaturization.” So what comes next? The answer still lies

EA walks away from Take-Two buyout – game over folks!
Video game publisher Electronic Arts said Sunday it ended talks to buy smaller rival Take-Two Interactive Software, best known for the “Grand Theft Auto” series of games. EA, the publisher of games such as “Madden NFL 09” and “Spore,” said it decided not to make an offer to buy Take-Two. Nothing like a long battle only to walk away at the end saying you didn't need it!
“EA is tracking toward a record-breaking year,” said President and Chief Executive John Riccitiello, in a statement. Spokesman Jeff Brown said Sunday EA is “not at all” disappointed that things didn't work out. Brown did not say what prompted EA to walk away from the discussions, but he said the company is confident in its own product portfolio. Take-Two, he added, was “never something EA needed.”

Micron reportedly to cut capex for 2009, say sources
Following the announcement of DRAM production cuts by Elpida Memory and Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) last week, Micron Technology also reportedly plans to slash its capital expenditure (capex) for 2009 to help stabilize the sagging DRAM market, industrial observers in Taiwan quoted sources at international institutional investors as saying.
According to the latest data from the institutional investors, Micron is expected to cut its capex for 2009 to US$750-1,500 million compared to US$1.5-2 billion as originally planned, said the industrial watchers. With regard to NAND flash, the industry observers also pointed out that Toshiba seemed to have reduced its shipments of NAND flash for this month, probably due to an increase in contract volumes received from clients as well as a delay in migration to a new process.
IT and Consumer Spending Down in 2H2008
If there was any doubt that the U.S. economy is hurting, taking a gander at today’s financial news should sober you up quickly: Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, and Bank of America is bailing out foundering Merrill Lynch. If you are not an investor, you might ask why you should care and what does this have to do with technology. The state of the economy is as much a reflection on actual financial circumstances as it is a perception of today’s and tomorrow’s financials. This means that what people and companies

One DRM to Rule Them All?
What would be the ideal form of DRM? Besides, obviously, no DRM, copy protection that’s industry-wide, so that you could snag something from one store or retailer and play it on any player, whether it be a Zune or an iPod, or even your DVD player, would be the dream of consumers. While piracy is the bane of the industry, the fact that Apple owns Fairplay and has a stranglehold on its market share is an obvious other consideration. One DRM would be helpful for the rest, though Apple probably
