Game Promotion Leads to Gridlock

Gasoline being given away?  In this age of $4 a gallon gasoline in the U.S., and much higher prices in Europe and elsewhere, would you riot over it?  All right, it wasn’t a riot, but it sure as heck was gridlock.Electronic Arts was trying to promote the Mercenaries 2: World in Flames game.  And the promotion was free gasoline (or petrol, as the BBC prefers).  Publicity they wanted, and publicity they got, but not all positive.Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said: “Whilst

Microsoft Gurus at Best Buy to Pimp Windows

It appears that Microsoft is doing a lot more than having Jerry Seinfeld munching churros and going shoe shopping with Bill Gates to help bolster the company’s image. Part of Microsoft’s $300 million marketing campaign includes placing Microsoft customer service representatives in select consumer electronics retail outlets across the U.S. Similar in nature to “Apple Geniuses,” Microsoft will be placing 155 “Microsoft Gurus” at Best Buy, Circuit City, and similar stores before the end of this year–presumably

Rumor: Samsung Considers Acquisition of SanDisk

SanDisk Corp., the world's largest maker of memory cards used in digital cameras, surged the most in almost eight years in Nasdaq trading after Samsung Electronics Co. said it may buy the U.S. company. Samsung pays $400 million to $500 million annually to use SanDisk's flash memory patents, according to estimates at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. The savings from royalty fees alone may justify an acquisition, Lehman's Chung Chang Won wrote in a note to clients today.

A takeover would help Samsung widen its lead over Toshiba Corp. in the $15 billion market for chips that store data in cameras and portable music players. Chipmakers are under pressure to consolidate after prices halved this year, driving SanDisk to its largest quarterly loss in almost seven years.

Dell planning to ditch factories

During the conference call reporting on second quarter financial results, Dell's new CFO Brian Gladden said several times that the company has “more work to be done,” to improve profitability and decrease costs. He wasn't kidding. Over the last year Dell has cut headcount by more than 8,000, and now The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company is planning to radically alter its production line by selling off its factories to contract manufacturers.

Dell has four factories in the U.S. and six outside the country. Competitors such as Hewlett-Packard have shifted some of their assembly work to more efficient contract manufacturers to lower production costs and increase operating margins. The Journal noted that Dell may not have an easy time ridding itself of its factories.

AMD to launch two low-power desktop CPUs for low-cost PC market in November

AMD is planning to launch two low-power desktop CPUs Athlon 2650e and Athlon X2 3250e under its UVC (Ultra-Value Client) product line targeting OEMs in November, according to sources at motherboard makers. The Athlon 2650e will have a core frequency of 1.6GHz and TDP f 15W, while the Athlon X2 3250e will have a core frequency of 1.5GHz and TDP of 22W. The two CPUs will be fabbed on a 65nm process and will only be provided to OEM customers (initially).

In additional news, AMD is also planning to launch a triple-core Phenom X3 8850 CPU using a 65nm process in early October. The CPU will feature a core frequency of 2.5GHz and a maximum TDP of 95W. The company will also launch a new Black Edition CPU in December. The company's transition to 45nm is also reportedly delayed. AMD is pushing the launch schedule of its 45nm quad-core CPUs (Deneb) to the end of 2008, however the launch is expected to slip to early January 2009, noted the sources.

Solid State Drive technology is set to turn the storage industry on its ear; there is little doubt of this. When you consider the intrinsic benefits of anything built on solid state technology versus anything mechanical, it doesn't take a degree in physics to understand the obvious advantages.
