12.5 Million Records Go Missing in Data Breach
Earlier this week we reported on Scotland’s Sunday Herald’s claim that the Best Western hotel group was hit with the world’s largest known data breach of eight million people’s sensitive information, as well as Best Western’s adamant denial. Even if the Sunday Herald story turns out to be true, the Best Western data breach would no longer hold the title of the world’s largest known data breach. That record now goes to the Bank of New York (BNY) Mellon, which “lost” the sensitive information of 12.5 million customers.

Comcast Announces 250 GB Broadband Cap
How many of you are aware of the 5 GB cap that Frontier DSL has imposed? Or of the trials in Beaumont, TX that Time-Warner Cable is running? It’s only a matter of time before others impose caps. And here we are, with a big ISP imposing a cap. But really, let’s be honest: this ISP already had one, just one that was hidden.Today Comcast detailed its new “network management” policies. Basically, they set a 250 GB cap on users, effective October first. It should be noted that
AMD Doesn’t Want You To Think NVIDIA is a Robin Hood
Do you remember the story behind Robin Hood? He is a man known for robbing the rich to give to the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny! Well, AMD doesn't want you to think that NVIDIA is going SLI away with today's announcement that SLI will be licensed to Intel X58 Express platforms. The story I wrote about it today sums this up in the title: NVIDIA Enables SLI on Intel X58 Chipsets For a Fee. AMD still feels strongly that multi-GPU technology should be free for it to be a success and I'd have to agree. Tell us what you think in the forums!
AMD's position has been open as a platform since day when they first launched the technology in June of 2006. ATI doesn't charge a licensing fee or fee to validate CrossFire support, so CrossFire costs consumers nothing. If you get SLI certified they forbid another graphics card logo to be placed on the box.
Thin TVs are In at IFA 2008
CES might be the largest consumer electronics (CE) trade show in the U.S., but it isn’t the only large-scale CE show, nor even the oldest. Taking place this week in Berlin is the IFA 2008 consumer electronics show, of which its origins actually date as far back as 1924 when it started as a trade show for the radio industry. Things have changed a bit since then. Samsung X360(Credit: Engadget)The show doesn’t actually officially kick off until Friday, but plenty of CE news is already pouring out of Berlin.

Nvidia backtracks to authorize native SLI technology support on Intel X58 motherboards
Nvidia will authorize native SLI support on Intel X58 motherboards without the need for its nForce 200 chip, according to Tom Peterson, director of Technical Marketing for MCP products at Nvidia. Nvidia will charge motherboard makers for certification, but the price will be cheaper than that for its nForce 200 chip, costing around US$30, which until recently Nvidia insisted was required to enable SLI on motherboards not using its own chipsets.
Peterson detailed that the company's partners will need to certify their X58 motherboards through Nvidia and, after certification, will receive an approval key to place in the system BIOS. Nvidia's drivers will check for the approval key and the device ID of the chipset before determining whether to enable SLI support on the system.
