New Comcast Triple-Play Subs to Get “Wii” Bonus

It certainly wouldn’t be a deal-breaker (or maker) to us, but if you still can’t get a Nintendo Wii (and annoyingly, it’s still in short supply), and you’re interested in signing your life away for two years to Comcast, this could be the deal for you.On Monday, hot on the heels of the announcement that Comcast will soon receive a slap on the wrist — and hopefully, an order to stop throttling P2P — Comcast announced that new subscribers to their Comcast Triple Play package will receive a complimentary Nintendo

John Carmack Has Big Plans For The iPhone

Id Software has had minimal success developing games for cell phones. It ported its popular Doom title over to the cell phone platform with Doom RPG, as well as developing two original Orcs and Elves games for phones. Ultimately, the three titles sold only a combined two million copies. The problem, at least up to now, is that cell phones have been less than ideal gaming platforms. They typically have small screens, limited processing power and memory, and awkward controls. But according to an article on Forbes.com,

Verizon Carpetbombs NYC With FiOS HD Channels

People dissatisfied with their local cable and satellite services often look longingly at Verizon’s FiOS TV service as an alternative. The problem has been that you can’t get the service in all that many places yet, and there’s a hopscotch effect to the places you can get it. Some people even have Verizon FiOS for their Internet connection and can’t get TV programming yet. Customers in New York City can now count themselves among the lucky people who can sign up for Verizon’s TV over fiber-optic lines; Verizon

More Zune Phone Rumors

Yet another Zune Phone rumor has been loosed thanks to a story posted at jkOnTheRun.  According to their anonymous source, Microsoft has been having meetings to discuss a Zune Phone designed to help the company do battle with Apple’s iPhone.  The Zune Phone would be powered by a specialized version of Windows Mobile 7 and include a lot of functionality powered by Windows Live services (why wait for the Zune Phone, MS?!).

We suppose a ZunePhone is possible, but shouldn’t Microsoft focus on making Windows Mobile 7 a modern, worthy competitor to Apple’s iPhone OS before they go hardware crazy?

New search engine takes aim at Google – Cuil

There's a big new search engine launching Monday: Cuil. Developed and run by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, it's pitched as bigger, faster, and better than Google's flagship search engine in pretty much every way. The search engine was working at 8am, but in the past few minutes it seems they ran into server issues and put up a message saying they are getting slammed with traffic.

The most important difference between Cuil and Google is its ranking system. Rather than assigning priority to pages based on inbound links as Google does (“Pagerank”), Cuil analyzes the content of Web pages to divine their relevance to a search query. Costello bristled when I asked if this was a semantic search engine like PowerSet (recently sold to Microsoft). Costello said Cuil's search is “contextual,” and that, “we're trying to understand the real world, not the Web.”

LG Display to cut output by 10 pct in downturn

LG Display Co Ltd the world's No. 2 maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, said on Sunday it would cut its panel output by around 10 percent until August because of weakening global demand.

Leading LCD makers have reaped strong profits in the first half but face a steep slowdown in the coming quarters as the global downturn hits demand for flat-screen TVs and personal computers. Consumers buy smaller television sets while flat TV makers such as Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd are in a fierce price war. AU, the third-ranked LCD maker, said last week it was scaling back production and its capacity utilization rate would fall to around 90 percent in the current quarter. Chi Mei has also undertaken similar steps.
