Microsoft cuts Xbox 360 price by $50

Microsoft Corp. is trimming the price of its Xbox 360 video game console to make way for a new model with a bigger hard drive. Starting Sunday, Microsoft's mid-range Xbox 360 console with a 20-gigabyte hard drive will cost $299 in the U.S., down from $350.

An updated Xbox 360 is set to arrive in stores in early August. The $350 replacement will sport a 60GB hard drive, significantly more space for storing the games, TV shows and movies Microsoft sells on its Xbox Live Marketplace Web site. Microsoft also is expected to give the Xbox a little extra appeal by streaming movies and TV episodes through a high-speed Internet service offering by Netflix Inc.

Apple’s iPhone 3G Passes 1 Million Mark

Apple said it surpassed 1 million iPhone 3G sales in the first three days the device was available, crushing the pace set by its predecessor. The phone went on sale Friday and reached the 1 million mark Sunday. The iPhone 3G is available in 21 countries, including the U.S., and it will go on sale in France later this week.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in a prepared statement. “It took 74 days to sell the first 1 million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

Yahoo rejects MS proposal, seeks bid for entire company

Yahoo on Saturday night rejected a joint proposal from Microsoft and investor Carl Icahn that had called for a restructuring and the sale of Yahoo's search business to Microsoft. The Internet company that had fought Microsoft's hostile bid for months has now suggested that the Redmond, Washington, software giant make an offer to acquire all of Yahoo.

The proposal had been made Friday evening, according to a Yahoo statement, and Yahoo was given fewer than 24 hours to accept it. The board said that it rejected it because its recent search deal with Google is financially superior and less risky than Microsoft/Icahn proposal and because the proposal precluded a potential sale of the entire company for a “full and fair price”. It also objected to the proposal's plan to immediately replace Yahoo's current board and top management team.

Gigabyte pushes into mid-range motherboard market, says paper

In order to prevent head-on competition with Asustek Computer, Gigabyte Technology has decided to fully push into the mid-range market this year, according to a Chinese-language Apple Daily report citing sources at the company.

Gigabyte's shipment proportion of mid-range motherboard was only 30% last year, but with the company planning to reduce the proportion of entry-level motherboards from 50% to 30% this year, the proportion of mid-range boards will increase to 40%, said the paper. The company is also looking to form cooperation agreements with telecommunications vendors to increase sales of its netbook product lines, which it hopes will be able to come down in price to under NT$10,000 (US$328.91), the paper added.
