NVIDIA Booked Astronaut Buzz Aldrin To Be At NVISION 08

NVIDIA today announced that NVISION 08 attendees are in for a special experience: an exclusive screening of Fly Me to the Moon, a brand-new digital 3D animated feature that will open in August in the U.S. In addition, NVIDIA is delighted to welcome the second man to walk on the moon, former Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, in a special guest appearance, addressing the NVISION audience at the beginning of the film screening. Kingston Releases HyperX DDR2 Memory SO-DIMMs in 3GB Kits

Kingston Technology just announced that they are shipping HyperX 800MHz low-latency DDR2 SO-DIMM notebook memory kits in 2- and 4GB capacities. The latest offering provides mobile computer users an even greater performance and flexibility option as the SO-DIMMs are pre-programmed with three serial presence detect (SPD) profiles, allowing the memory to work in 800MHz-CL5, 667MHZ-CL4 and 533MHz-CL3 low-latency configurations.

The Kingston 3GB Kit HyperX 667MHz (Part Number KHX5300S2LLK2/3G) has memory timings of 4-4-4-12 at 1.8V and has an MSRP of just $102.50. The Kingston 3GB Kit HyperX 800MHz Low Latency (Part Number KHX6400S2LLK2/3G) has memory timings of 5-5-5-18 at 1.8V and has an MSRP of just $106.25.

Dreamworks drops AMD processors and will use Intel processors for 3-D movies

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., maker of the “Shrek” movies and “Kung Fu Panda,” announced Tuesday it will switch from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. computer chips to Intel Corp.'s as it moves toward making all 3-D movies. DreamWorks will use Intel's visual computing products for 3-D animated feature films starting with its “Monsters vs. Aliens” movie, set for domestic release on March 27, 2009, it said.

“The impact of these new chipsets is that it will go from overnight to hours to minutes,” he said. “Within a handful of years — or less, actually — we may achieve the Holy Grail of our business, which is to actually work in real time. So it's actually, literally in the moment of creation, you can see your work.” Some 1,000 workstations and 1,500 server units at DreamWorks Animation will make the switch to Intel chips over the next 18 months, and a team of Intel engineers will fine-tune DreamWorks' proprietary software for use on the new equipment.

Acer to sell off memory module subsidiary Apacer

Acer has decided to sell off all of its 34.4% holding in memory module subsidiary Apacer Technology, with Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), A-Data Technology, and Apacer's current management team set to take up the released shares, according to industry sources. The memory market has been tough this year and an insider tipped us off this that OCZ Technology and Corsair Memory cut sales and marketing jobs in recent weeks. With companies cutting jobs and selling off memory holdings it is a sign of how tough the market really is right now.

PSC is expected to take a thin slice of the Acer holdings, which will nevertheless make it the biggest shareholder of Apacer with an almost 25% stake, the sources said. Apacer's management team will increase its stake to 20% to become the second largest shareholder, followed by A-Data, who will have 5-10%, the sources said. PSC and A-Data declined to comment, but Apacer said its management team is taking over most of the shares released by the parent company in order to demonstrate its confidence in Apacer.
