When It Leaks, It Pours: WinMo 6.1 411 from AT&T 2008 Roadmap

In addition to learning that the Samsung BlackJack 3 is headed to AT&T Mobility later this year, the leaked AT&T 2008 roadmap has a lot to say about Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrades for existing WinMo devices.

According to the document, most of AT&T Mobility’s current Windows Mobile offerings will see WM6.1 upgrades later this month, including the AT&T Tilt, BlackJack 2, and Motorola Q 9h.  The Pantech Duo won’t see WM6.1 until October, and the Palm Treo 750 isn’t scheduled for an update at all.

Data Centers Help Measure How To Be Green

The inconvenient truth about data centers is that they consume lots of power. In addition to running a building-full of systems and storage devices 24/7, power is also consumed for networking equipment, cooling, battery backups, and even to support more modest human needs, such as lights and coffee makers. Both economically and socially, the United States is growing more conscientious of the need for power conservation. That’s where programs like Energy Star take an active role. You’ve probably seen Energy

Gateway P-6831FX Gaming Notebook

While there are quite a few manufacturers building GeForce 8800M equipped notebooks, almost all of them are high-end products that demand top dollar for the pleasure. Gateway’s “P-Series FX” line-up of 17″ gaming notebooks seems no different at first glance.  However, careful inspection of their product specifications reveals that the most junior P-Series FX model weighs in at just $1,349.99, a decidedly mid-range price point for this type of machine. Yet it’s still powered by a GeForce 8800M, just like

Apple Gobbles Up 50M Samsung NAND Chips

Samsung has started spreading the word to its customers that NAND flash memory chips are going to be harder to come by for a little while as Samsung diverts much of its available supply to Apple. When Apple places an order for 50 million 8Gb NAND chips, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Apple gets to cut the line and is offered a spot at the front of the queue. NAND flash memory chips are used in USB flash drives, MP3 players, cell phones, and other small-form-factor consumer electronics devices. What does Apple

Well, Albany is now Equipt, but you won’t find it in the state of New York: for now, starting in mid-July, you’ll find it only at Circuit City. In a press release on Wednesday, Microsoft announced the launch: Initially code-named “Albany,” Microsoft Equipt offers consumers Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, giving them the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and

Does This Software Smell Funny To You?

In any discussion of the vulnerability of your computer to malware, the discussion is often centered around the cutting edge of the battles between new threats and new versions of browsers and software to combat them. But the dirty little secret we don’t discuss much is: Most software is older than dirt. Does software need a fresh sale date? Security researchers are beginning to think so.In a newly published paper, Stefan Frei and Martin May of the Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory at ETH Zurich,

Forget Printer Ink. A Text Message Is 20 Cents

Gasoline costs four bucks, but a gallon of it will get you twenty or thirty miles farther away from your mother-in-law, so it’s worth it. Printer ink is famously expensive, going for upwards of $8000 a gallon, but at least you can use it to print a letter to the editor of your newspaper complaining about high gasoline prices. Lots of things are expensive, but we’re hard pressed to come up with anything that seems to costs so much for how little you get than a text message. All the major carriers are raising
