Amsterdam gets Europe’s first mobile Wimax network

A commercial network launched in Amsterdam on Tuesday is the first in Europe to use a mobile version of the Wimax standard to allow users to surf the Web at high speeds while on the move, operator Worldmax said. The broadband wireless network is aimed at competing with telecoms operators KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile, the privately held Dutch firm said.

The company will charge about 20 euros ($31) per month for a wireless broadband connection for laptop computers with unlimited amount of data. With comparable speeds to broadband, a lower price and no long-term contract, Van der Vlist said Worldmax expects to gain customers from mobile operators, but eventually also attract new customer groups such as teenagers which at the moment cannot afford mobile broadband.

Take-Two Responds to Electronic Arts’ Tender Offer – No Way

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. today responded to Electronic Arts Inc.'s announcement that it is extending for a fourth time its unsolicited conditional tender offer to acquire all of Take-Two's outstanding shares. The Board of Directors remains in unanimous agreement that the proposal is contrary to the best interests of Take-Two stockholders, and the Board continues to recommend that stockholders not tender their shares to EA.

“The latest extension of EA's unsolicited, highly conditional tender offer does not alter the fact that their proposal still significantly undervalues Take-Two, a fact that is reflected in the overwhelming number of stockholders who still have not tendered their shares,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of the Board of Take-Two. “Our Board of Directors remains in unanimous agreement that the proposal is contrary to the best interests of Take-Two stockholders, and the Board continues to recommend that stockholders not tender their shares to EA. The Board remains focused on the strategic process that began formally on April 30 to consider all alternatives to maximize value. We believe that these alternatives, which may include a business combination or remaining independent, will deliver greater value to stockholders than the current EA offer.”

AMD to update its low-power CPU lineup

AMD is planning to launch several low-power triple-core and quad-core CPUs during the second half of 2008 all featuring a TDP of 65W, according to sources at motherboard makers. Meanwhile the company will launch the low-power quad-core Phenom X4 9350e in the third quarter and another model in the fourth quarter, the sources added, and in the first quarter of 2009, AMD will begin to roll out its 45nm quad-core CPUs (Propus) targeting core frequencies between 2.3-2.6GHz.

Two low-power triple-core Phenom CPUs X3 8250e and 8450e will feature core frequencies of 1.9GHz and 2.1GHz, respectively, and both include an L2 cache of 1.5MB and L3 cache of 2MB. The two CPUs will enter DVT in July and start mass production at the beginning of August. If the process goes smoothly, the two CPUs should appear in the channel by mid to late August, the sources said.

ASUS My Cinema – PE9400 Combo TV Card Announced

For the consumer who needs to watch one thing while recording another, ASUS, has introduced a new PCI-express TV tuner, the ASUS My Cinema – PE9400 Combo. This versatile add-in card supports both digital (ATSC/QAM) and analog (NTSC) TV formats, and features an MPEG2 hardware encoder to reduce CPU loading with high-quality video output allowing users to enjoy an all-in-one PC multimedia package. The My Cinema PE9400 Combo will be available via ASUS North American resellers starting July 1st, 2008 with the introductory MSRP being $79 USD.

The My Cinema – PE9400 Combo allows users to watch and record high-quality digital (ATSC/QAM) and analog (NTSC) TV programs on their PCs simultaneously. This card adopts a 500 Mb/s PCI Express x1 interface, which is 3 times faster than the default PCI bus (133Mb/s) in transmission speed. An embedded MPEG2 hardware encoder dramatically reduces CPU loading whilst guaranteeing high-quality video when processing transmissions. This allows users to surf the Internet and record TV programs without degrading performance. Additionally, the PE9400 Combo leverages hardware noise reduction technology, which minimizes video artifacts.

Tweaknews has posted their In Win Powerman Commander 1200 Watt Power Supply Review! Find this and other reviews from around the 'net by visiting our forums!

“In-Win is surely going to turn some heads with the Commander not only does it have a one of a kind look, it has demonstrated excellent stability and its four +12V rails are ready to power up any hardware thrown its way. I can see this being not only a good choice for today's gaming rigs, but it should easily last through another upgrade or two as well. Realistically, not many current systems out there are going to pull 1200W of power but in a few years this might be exactly what's needed.”

AMD Stream Processor First to Break 1 Teraflop Barrier

At the International Supercomputing Conference, AMD today introduced its next-generation stream processor, the AMD FireStream 9250, specifically designed to accelerate critical algorithms in high-performance computing (HPC), mainstream and consumer applications. Leveraging the GPU design expertise of AMD's Graphics Product Group, AMD FireStream 9250 breaks the one teraflop barrier for single precision performance. It occupies a single PCI slot, for unmatched density and with power consumption of less than 150 watts, the AMD FireStream 9250 delivers an unprecedented rate of performance per watt efficiency with up to eight gigaflops per watt.

The AMD FireStream 9250 stream processor includes a second-generation double-precision floating point hardware implementation delivering more than 200 gigaflops, building on the capabilities of the earlier AMD FireStream 9170, the industry's first GP-GPU with double-precision floating point support. The AMD FireStream 9250's compact size makes it ideal for small 1U servers as well as most desktop systems, workstations, and larger servers and it features 1GB of GDDR3 memory, enabling developers to handle large, complex problems.
