SSDs: Price, Capacity Or Performance. You Choos

They say that beggars can’t be choosers, but apparently consumers can be.  The choice that consumers are likely to be faced with in the near future is not whether to go down the SSD route, but which type of SSD do they want.“Faster drives and a falling cost-per-gigabyte should help bring drive costs down from the stratosphere and into a price bracket more consumers can afford, but the focus in the manufacturing world right now is on boosting storage capacities and performance, not reducing costs. It’s very

AMD Shipping Phenom B3s

After numerous delays the Phenom finally shipped late last year, but suffered an immediate set back due to the TLB errata issue.  This certainly didn’t help AMD pull off a stellar launch, but the issue has been fixed in the new B3 series K10 CPUs.“In addition to fixing the TLB race condition, AMD will finally increase the core frequency of the Opteron series on the B3 stepping.  After the initial OEM orders are filled, channel vendors like Newegg and TigerDirect will carry the new Opterons in frequencies

GTA 4 To Impact Hollywood?

One of our favorite uses for all this hardware, gaming, is starting to generate titles large enough to effect other parts of the entertainment industry.  No longer are A-list games only competing with each other for sales, but now it seems that the latest movie releases are being factored into the equation.  Of course, whatever effects the studios also has an impact on their bottom line:”We anticipate the video game release of GTA IV on April 29 could dampen the potential from Iron Man’s theatrical

Pacemakers the Latest Hacking Target

A report, to be presented at a California computer-security conference in May, suggests that pacemakers and defibrillators may be targets for hacking.Millions of Americans have pacemakers, which keeps hearts beating regularly, or an implanted defibrillator, which can restart stopped hearts with an electric jolt. After implanting a defibrillator under a patient’s skin, a doctor uses a special device, about the size of a breadbox, to tell the defibrillator what to do — for example, to instruct it to keep the

After 10 Years of LAN Gaming the CPL Ceases Operations

It seems like yesterday that I was down in Dallas for the Winter CPL back in 2004, but that was back when things were going good in the gaming industry. I guess I'll have to look at old pictures of past CPL events as the CPL is no longer hosting events. Remember back in 2006 the canceled the CPL World Tour, but things turned around for them. Then again back in 2006 I wrote a little editorial about how LAN gaming was headed in the wrong direction and they two groups I highlighted (WSVG and CPL) are both gone now. Makes you think for a second…

Effective immediately, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) will cease operations. Therefore, all CPL events currently scheduled for 2008 are hereby canceled. The CPL was launched in June 1997 with the pioneering mission of promoting and sanctioning video game competitions as a professional sport. For ten years the CPL events experienced increased growth – commencing with a small LAN event in Dallas, Texas, and culminating in world-class competitions across five continents.

The goal of F@H and Stanford is to apply this new technology to dramatically advance the capabilities of the project, applying their simulations to further study of protein folding and related diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease, Huntington's Disease, and certain forms of cancer. With these computational advances, coupled with new simulation methodologies to harness the new techniques, Stanford believes they will be able to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, and make even greater impacts on our knowledge of folding and folding related diseases.
