National Semiconductor said Wednesday it will slash about a quarter of its worldwide workforce because of fast slumping sales and profit. And the situation isn't getting better. The company said it expects its fourth quarter sales to be down 5 percent to 10 percent from the third quarter due to the recession.<\/p>\n

The Santa Clara chipmaker said it will close two manufacturing plants and cut 1,725 jobs. About 330 Santa Clara employees will be laid off, bringing the company's workforce here to 1,220, said spokeswoman LuAnn Jenkins. It was the second lay-off announcement the company has made recently.
