‘Windows Mobile’ Name to Remain After All

Windows Mobile We were never sold on the notion that Microsoft would dump the name Windows Mobile when referring to the company’s mobile OS.

Brighthand Editor Ed Hardy just posted a story quoting Microsoft group products manager for Windows Mobile Scott D. Rockfeld clarifying the “Windows Mobile / Windows Phone” naming issue:

We introduced the term "Windows Phone" to the industry at Mobile World Congress as a way to make it easy for consumers to identify the set of phones with Windows software and services on them. However, we will still use the term "Windows Mobile" to identify the operating system releases (e.g. – 6.1, 6.5). But ultimately, we want customers to be able to go into a retail store and say, "I want a Windows phone!"

So, Windows Phone will, indeed, be the latest Microsoft term for smartphones powered by their mobile OS, but the name Windows Mobile will remain as the name of its operating system.
