When it launched last year, the Core i7 platform redefined Intel's high-end processor segment. Unfortunately, the platform was also accompanied by high-end prices. As such, it has seen only a minimal share of the desktop market. However, Intel has released a new platform that it claims will bring the performance of Nehalem to mainstream price points. Referred to as Lynnfield, the new platform shares its core microarchitecture with the i7-900 series, but introduces a completely new chipset and socket design. This means that not only will we see new processors, but new motherboards as well. Benchmark Reviews has been testing several of these new items and will be covering the launch in detail over the next few days. In this article, we examine the Intel Core i7-870 Quad Core Processor model BX80605I7870.

Dell announced new laptops and desktops yesterday as part of an array of new products coming out this fall. The new Inspiron 14z & 15z ultra-slim profile CULV laptops, combine portability, power and easy personalization into the new Z product line. The design features thinner, lighter bodies, longer-lasting power-sipping batteries and incredible performance. The Inspiron 14z and 15z are available in black or cherry red and can be purchased from $599 in retail stores and at www.dell.com beginning today, with worldwide availability in the coming weeks. They also announced the XPS 8000 & 9000 desktops, using Intels newest Core i5 and Core i7-800 processor series.

The thinnest-ever models of Dells most popular consumer laptop PC, the new Inspiron 14z and 15z are about 1-inch thin, slim enough to fit in any bag, and feature the newest Intel Core Solo 2 ultra-low voltage processors for extended entertainment capability and Web surfing. They join the recently introduced Inspiron 11z, rounding out the Inspiron z portfolio of thin, power-sipping laptops.

Velocity Micro announced the immediate availability of desktop PCs powered by the newest additions to the Intel family of processors, the Intel Core i5-750, Core i7-860 processor, and Core i7-870 processor. With configurations starting at $1099, these new desktops promise extreme power at an attainable value, perfect for both mainstream and power users.

The new line of processors mark the emergence of Intels socket 1156 products. Built on the Nehalem architecture, the socket 1156 processors provide enthusiast power at a very attainable value, ideal for gaming, digital media creation, and other CPU intensive applications on more of a budget. Velocity Micro will feature the Core i5-750, Core i7-860, and Core i7-870 along with the Intel P55 Express chipset in their Vector Z35 home & office PC as well as the Edge Z30, an Editors Choice Award winner from PC Magazine. Expertly engineered configurations start as low as $1099.

Foxconn Electronics has given up marketing graphics cards under its own brand and has rearranged its Channel Service Division (CSD) shifting the majority of the 9,000 employees, mainly related to production, to its OEM division. Around 500, mainly sales and marketing related, staff remain in CSD, according to Young Liu, special assistant to the CEO. Foxconn CSD recently included white-box netbook and smartbook businesses under its operation, and will take a conservative attitude toward its own-brand motherboard business, Liu noted. We here at Legit Reviews have not seen a Foxconn branded card since the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 launch, so this isn't a big surprise.

Due to low penetration of 3G networks in China and the limits of 10-inch displays which have impacted demand for Intel Atom-based netbooks, Foxconn's netbook shipments in China have been limited, Liu said. However, the company is working aggressively to land more orders and is aiming to become the leader in the local market. Although some white-box netbook vendors will use Foxconn's brand name for marketing, Foxconn's current notebook and netbook orders are all OEM-based, Liu clarified.

Western Digital (WD) today announced that it has started volume shipments of its 9.5 mm high, 2.5-inch notebook hard drives with 640 GB capacity. The WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB hard drives utilize 320 GB-per-platter technology and are designed for mainstream notebook computers. The WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB is the highest capacity 2.5-inch hard drive available today in the industry-standard 9.5 mm, 2-disk form factor. Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB is $149.00 USD and the hard drives are covered by a three-year limited warranty.

Although this version of the Touch Pro2 is CDMA, it also supports GSM networks around the world.
