Study Shows Gamers are Fat, Unhappy, and Middle-Aged

A new study by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University and Andrews University concludes that the average age of video-gamers in the U.S. is in the range 35–54. It also says that those gamers are fat, and miserable, though differences exist across genders. Study: Average gamer is 35, fat and bummed

A new study says the average age of video-game players in the United States is 35, and oh, by the way: They're overweight and tend to be depressed. The hypothesis was that video-game players have a higher body mass index the measure of a person's weight in relation to their height and “a greater number of poor mental health days” versus nonplayers, said Dr. James B. Weaver III of the CDC's National Center for Health Marketing. The hypothesis was correct, he said.

Investigators from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University and Andrews University analyzed survey data from 552 adults in the Seattle-Tacoma area. The subjects ranged in age from 19 to 90, according to the study, published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

HP sees biz stabilizing as PC shipments rise 2%

Hewlett-Packard Co. said it saw signs of stability as it reported a quarterly profit and outlook on Tuesday that beat Wall Street's forecasts. A 2% rise in PC shipments helped drive results. HP is the world's largest tech company in terms of revenue and the largest global PC maker.

“HP's performance this quarter is a result of our strong business portfolio, efficient cost structure and scale,” HP Chief Executive Mark Hurd said on a conference call with analysts. “Business is stabilizing, and we are confident that HP will be an early beneficiary of an economic turnaround … when conditions improve.”

New “Slim” PS3 Arrives In September for $299

After months of anticipation, Sony has announced at GamesCom in Cologne it's new PlayStation 3 Slim. The system have a 33% slimmer form factor than the original PS3, as well as a lower price tag of $299. The PS3 Slim will have all the same features as the current PS3 but, unfortunately, will not have backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.

The Kmart site describes the de-bulked PS3 as having a 120GB hard drive and DualShock 3 controller. The current PS3 model, with an 80-gigabyte drive,is priced at $399; that price is expected to drop imminently.
