Cyber attack knocks out government Web sites

A widespread and unusually resilient computer attack that began July 4 knocked out the Web sites of several government agencies, including some that are responsible for fighting cyber crime. Suspected cyber assaults also paralyzed Web sites of major South Korean government agencies, banks and Internet sites in a barrage that appeared linked to the attacks in the U.S., South Korean officials said Wednesday.

The Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the holiday weekend and into this week, according to officials inside and outside the government. Some of the sites were still experiencing problems Tuesday evening. U.S. officials refused to publicly discuss details of the cyber attack. But Amy Kudwa, spokeswoman for the Homeland Security Department, said the agency's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team issued a notice to federal departments and other partner organizations about the problems and “advised them of steps to take to help mitigate against such attacks.”

Fusion-io vs Intel X25-M SSD RAID, Grudge Match

We’ve certainly heard of Fusion-io’s bleeding edge PCI Express-based SSD solution but to date haven’t yet gotten the chance to check it out on the test bench here at HotHardware.  In addition, though we’ve put Intel’s wonderfully fast X25-M SSD through its paces in stand-alone testing, imagine what it would be like with up to four drives in RAID 0.  You see where we’re going here, a battle royal of what is arguably some of the fastest SSD storage technology money can buy right now.  So the stage

Google OS lives (and it’s coming to a netbook near you)

Ars has learned that Google is preparing to deliver a Chrome-focused operating system that targets netbooks.

Two separate sourcesone inside the company and one outside ithave confirmed to Ars tonight that Google plans to launch an operating system built in some fashion around its new web browser, Chrome. One source says that the new OS will be launched soon, perhaps as early as tomorrow. Tentatively called “Google Chrome OS,” the project appears targeted at netbooks, the tiny portable computers typically used only for such light tasks as web browsing and e-mail. Chrome, of course, isn't an operating system, but a quick-booting OS built around a single application like Chrome would be a natural fit for a netbook. With such an OS, Google could obviously make it extra easy for users to access the full range of Google cloud applications through the browserGoogle Docs, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.
