AMD Phenom II Black Edition TWKR Edition Processors!

AMD just dropped off some fresh TWKR Black Edition Phenom II chips over at MainGear PC this morning. AMDs didnt tell them much about the new mysterious CPU other than it should overclock really well and are essentially hand picked and binned Phenom II X4 955 processors. Our sources inside AMD informed us that these TWKR edition processors are meant for extreme overclocking as the core of the CPU has high leakage, which is what is more desirable for overclocking. These high-leakage chips are best used with LN2 and phase change cooling in order to reach their full potential. No word on pricing, but we can expect these to be priced more than the Phenom II X4 955 and they run $245 shipped.

AMD TWKR Black Edition Phenom II

A Phenom II X4 processor without a model number? TWKR? What does it all mean? Well, AMD culled these parts from their Phenom II X4 line that are supposed to overclock beyond the capabilities of the Phenom II X4 955. They hand delivered these parts to us and were going to put them through the ringer. Will they come out the other side as something truly special? Should Dirk Meyer sign these before we put them in a system? Well let you know as soon as we put them through our brutal Redline validation process

Millions Still Not Ready For DTV Transition

The day so many had hoped to put off forever is almost here: June 12. That’s the day when all broadcast channels must transition to digital broadcasting and millions of viewers across the nation will end up without TV service. The horror! While most people — anyone with cable or satellite television, for example — won’t be affected, there are an awful lot of people out there who rely on the free broadcast signal that floats through the airwaves for their television service. It’s estimated that fully 2.8 million

PhotoFast G-Monster 2.5″ V5 SSD Announced

Coming in 32, 64, 128 and 256GB capacities, the G-Monster V5 and V5J drives features a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, have a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 2.5 million hours and come backed by a one-year warranty. No word on pricing right now.

PhotoFast G-Monster V5J SSD

The main differences between the two V5 models is that the former has been built using an Indilinx controller and 128MB of cache memory, while the latter has been designed using JMicron's latest controller, featuring 256MB of buffer. These enable the two drives to deliver various performance stats, with the Indilix-based V5 model offering read and write speeds of 270MB/s (32/64GB versions reach 200MB/s when writing), while the JMicron model provides speeds of 240/200MB/s respectively.

Nanotube Chips Promise Billion Year Storage

Currently storage technology has a finite shelf life but researchers are currently investigating promising new storage technologies that could keep data around for the days of warp drive.

The scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California said the new technology can potentially pack thousands of times more data into one square inch of space than today's chips.

“We've developed a new mechanism for digital memory storage that consists of a crystalline iron nanoparticle shuttle enclosed within the hollow of a multiwalled carbon nanotube,” said physicist Alex Zettl, who led this research.

USB Powered Microwave For Desktop Gourmet Goodness

Think you've seen it all when it comes to USB powered gadgets? Think again. The USB powered mini microwave is here so grab your Spaghetti-O's and a spoon.

It is the world's smallest, portable microwave and can be powered via a link to the USB port on a laptop computer.

The turquoise device -called the Beanzawave – has been created in partnership with Heinz to allow workers tied to their desks to create a warm snack, or hot drink, to see them through the day.

And the convenience of powering it from a laptop computer means you could tuck into a hot snack while flying on holiday or even on the train.

To date, the device, which stands just 7.4inches tall by 6.2in wide and 5.9in deep, is only a prototype.

GeForce GTX 275 and Radeon HD 4890 Round-Up

The PC world was treated to one of those rare occurrences a few weeks back–a 1-2 punch into the 3D graphics fray from both ATI and NVIDIA. We’re talking about the near simultaneous launches of the ATI Radeon HD 4890 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275. Both of their names lead to obvious suggestions about where they fit into their respective families. With the Radeon HD 4890, one might assume that there was an update made to the venerable HD 4870, and for the most part that assumption would be correct. Both GPUs share

Microsoft Doesn’t Expect Huge Boost From Win7

Expectations couldn’t possibly be higher for Microsoft’s next-generation operating system. Amazingly, this will be the first Windows OS that will actually run smoother on current-gen hardware than the prior OS. Indeed, the Release Candidate of Windows 7 that is on the market today runs far smoother on current machines than Vista, and while Vista practically drags netbooks to a crawl, Win7 hums along just fine. That said, it seems that Microsoft is keeping its hopes in check with the impending release. We already
