HAL Exoskeleton Suit Hits Mass Production: $4200

With all this talk of the new Terminator flick, we can’t begin to think of a more timely announcement for this particular news bit. The HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) Cybernetic Suit, described as an exoskeleton and designed to give average humans superhuman abilities, is just about to hit mass production. If you’ll recall, we first caught wind of this very system way back in October 2006, and just now its creator is getting around to pumping these out with any semblance of regularity. And we guess it makes sense

Microsoft, Yahoo! Start Talking Again

Talks between Microsoft and Yahoo! over a possible search advertising partnership have begun anew, according to multiple reports. The reports came from sources familiar with the situation. Yahoo! Chief Executive Carol Bartz and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer met last week as part of the discussions. Discussion are still in early stages, but do not include a possible acquisition by Microsoft, an earlier attempt of which was fought off by Yahoo! last year. One outsider who had been told of the discussions said: “It’s

Can GSM/Satellite Hybrid Phones Go Mainstream?

While satellite phones were last hot during the original Jurassic Park, there’s apparently still a market out there for folks who find themselves in some of the world’s most remote locales. TerreStar Corporation and SkyTerra are attempting to do what rivals Iridium and Globalstar haven’t been able to: launch a serious sat phone service without having to resort to bankruptcy just years after the initial investment. In two months, TerreStar is expected to shoot a massive commercial satellite into space, some 22,000

Time Warner Suggests $150/Month Internet Access

After having been stung by negative public reaction to the Internet data caps it is trialing in several markets, Time Warner has issued another public statement. The statement from Landel Hobbs, Chief Operating Officer at Time Warner Cable, explains how bandwidth consumption is growing exponentially. While more content on the Internet and more demand for bandwidth is definitely a good thing, it also means Time Warner must maintain and upgrade its network to meet the increased demand. Rather than raising prices

Apple Soon to Hit 1 Billion App Store Downloads

If there is any doubt as to the popularity of iPhone Apps, then the fact that Apple is about to mark the one-billionth iPhone App download should put any potential skepticism to rest. At the moment, Apple estimates that over 929-million apps have been downloaded since the App Store first launched less than a year ago, on July 10, 2008. This means that from the beginning of the App Store’s launch until now, an average of about 3.39-million apps per day have been downloaded; but as app downloads have been steadily

HH Deal of The Day, GeForce GTX 280: $259

For some of you, today is what’s known as Good Friday.  And we’d offer that for all of you, it could very well be “gooder” than you think.  If you’ve been following our coverage of NVIDIA’s new line of GeForce GTX 285 cards, you’ll note that we were optimistic that the migration of the GT200 GPU to a new 55nm process for the GTX 285, would drive down prices a bit as retailers and distributors blow out their aging inventory of GeForce GTX 280 cards, to make room for the new lower power, optimized

96% Of Netbooks Run Windows XP–Surprised?

These days, specifications on netbooks are almost predictable. Without looking, we’d say there’s an 85% chance that any given netbook you look at has a 1.6GHz Atom processor, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM and no optical drive. Oh, and Windows XP — it probably has Windows XP. In fact, the vast majority of netbooks today have Microsoft’s not-exactly-newest OS, with a recent report asserting that around 96% of all miniature laptops have WinXP installed. It’s a funny bit, too, as we recall the day when Microsoft

Abit quits brand business

Second-tier motherboard maker Abit has reportedly quit the consumer electronics branding business covering product lines such as digital photo frames putting itself completely out of the channel market, according to sources in the channel. It is weird to see Abit gone as they were one of the few companies that supported overclocking and was even the first company to sign a contract with Fata1ty. Without them the enthusiast market might look very different than it does right now.

Abit quit the motherboard brand business at the end of last year and is currently focusing on motherboard ODM/OEM business.
