Study: Facebook Users Have Lower GPA

While one study indicates that a little Internet leisure time at work can increase productivity, a second study now shows college students who regularly use social networking site Facebook have lower GPAs than those who do not. My comment, or rather question: they actually found college students who didn’t use Facebook? Researcher Aryn Karpinski conducted the study with a colleague at Ohio State University. They questioned 219 undergraduate and graduate students about their study habits and Internet use, as

Search Google Images By Color, Type and More

Sometimes when searching for images on the web, you have a very specific look in mind. A color, a drawing vs. photograph, only extra-large images. With that in mind, Google’s rolled out several filters on its image searches that allow users to do just that.Need photographs of purple orchids? Got it:How about only photos of orchids that have been used in news reports?Or line drawings of signs that are mostly red (Go Badgers!):You can even get just small images – for thumbnails, avatars and the like – of, say,

Apple Issues VoiceOver Kit 1.0.1 For New Shuffle

It hasn’t even been a full month since Apple launched the first iPod Shuffle with speech capabilities, and already the diminutive player is seeing its first software update. Announced late in the day on Friday, the VoiceOver Kit 1.0.1 (which bumps things up from 1.0.0) is the first update for both the player and its talking capabilities. The download weighs in at 17MB, and while a full blown changelog isn’t provided (trust us, that’s typical of Apple), we are told that it contains “pronunciations for several

Intel Confirms Moorestown Launch For 2010

While 2010 still seems forever away, at least Intel isn’t looking to delay things further with regard to its Moorestown platform. At the company’s Developer Forum in Beijing, China, it confirmed that the MID platform would indeed launch sometime next year. Unfortunately, it failed to lock down a specific month or quarter, but we get the feeling we’ll be hearing more exact details at its get-together in San Francisco this fall. Moorestown will reportedly launch alongside a brand new version of Moblin, a Linux-based

Is Amazon Developing A Larger Screen Kindle?

Reports indicate Amazon is working on a new version of its Kindle e-book reader that will have a larger screen. According to sources who say they have seen versions of the device, the new Kindle could make its debut before this year’s holiday shopping season. By offering a Kindle e-book reader with a larger screen, Amazon would be better positioned to compete for the business of newspaper and magazine publishers who are searching for new distribution platforms for their digital content. Amazon currently offers

QWERTY Cellphones Displacing Numeric Models

What does your current cellphone look like? What did your prior cellphone look like? Better yet, what did your phone look like in 2000? If you suddenly realized that you’ve transitioned from a standard numeric keypad-based candybar phone to a touchscreen-based or slide out QWERTY keyboard-based phone, you definitely aren’t alone. According to new research on the subject, cellphones with full keyboards are all the rage, and it doesn’t seem to be a fad. In fact, it seems that QWERTY cellphones are actually displacing

Bluetooth 3.0 Coming April 21

It’s official: Bluetooth 3.0 is coming. The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) will officially launch Bluetooth 3.0 on April 21st. Previously called Bluetooth UWB, the new Bluetooth 3.0 standard is expected to deliver faster short-range wireless speeds that are at least 18 times faster than the current 2.0 + EDR version. More specifically, the standard is said to support up to 480 Mb/s. Even over distances between 6 feet and 30 feet, the Bluetooth 3.0 data rate is expected to be at least 53.3 Mb/s, and more

Protests Over Silencing of Kindle 2

The Reading Rights Coalition, an advocacy group that represents the blind as well as disabled readers, held a protest outside the offices of The Authors Guild on Tuesday. The organization hopes to get the Guild to reverse its stance on the Kindle 2’s “Read-to-Me” functionality. The Authors Guild earlier placed a lot of pressure on Amazon.com over the Kindle 2’s “Read-to-Me” feature, which it claimed infringed on the rights of authors by providing a unauthorized audiobook version of a book on the device.
