Apple is finally acknowledging the existence of small cracks in older white plastic MacBooks. According to AppleInsider, the Mac maker issued a bulletin to its authorized service providers last month that identified four key areas of the case that are prone to hairline cracking. Although Apple admits to the flaw and is willing to cover some of the repair expenses, there are some stipulations. The bulletin asked providers to inspect the MacBook carefully to determine if the cracks could have been caused by dropping

Intel’s Anti-Theft Tech Comes To Asus P Series
Here lately, Asus has spent the bulk of its time pumping out all sorts of new GPUs. Today, however, it’s going back to its roots — and by that, we mean, back to the notebook arena. The outfit’s P Series, which was just showcased at CeBIT in Germany last month, will soon be equipped with Intel’s own Anti-Theft Technology in an effort to curb the growing theft of laptop computers. Not surprisingly, Asus is aiming this at businesses, business users and everyday consumers that tend to travel often. The Anti-theft

The iriver P7 PMP Transcodes Video For You
This last January, iriver made quite a splash when it showed off its 2009 lineup of portable multimedia players (PMPs) at CES. Tech journalists swamped the iriver booth like a fast-moving school of fish, trying to get a closer look at the prototype models that were on display–especially the P7, which is the flagship of the line. Pricing and availability were still unknown, leaving us high-and-dry, waiting for the wave of products to eventually stream into stores. Well, at least for the much-anticipated P7,

Tech Jobs Are Not Recession-Proof According To New Data
The tech industry, once one of the hottest sectors for job seekers, is falling victim to dried up spending as the recession takes its toll. After three years of at least 2.5% employment growth in the United States, tech jobs are forecast to decline by 1.2% this year, according to Forrester Research. They have already fallen by nearly 1% since their November peak, according to the Labor Department. Year to date, 8,000 tech jobs have been slashed, including 4,100 just last month.
But those who work in fields that aren't as crucial to the day-to-day business, like research and development or software engineering, are expected to face steeper cuts. Help desk professionals are also expected to be among the first to get handed pink slips, as companies with large-scale layoffs need fewer tech support staff members. “These roles are a bit of a luxury that both [technology] vendors and [technology] departments can afford in good times, but not so much in bad times,” Bartels said.
Cyberspies penetrate electrical grid in America
Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls, the newspaper said, citing current and former U.S. national security officials.
“The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid,” a senior intelligence official told the Journal. “So have the Russians.” The espionage appeared pervasive across the United States and does not target a particular company or region, said a former Department of Homeland Security official. “There are intrusions, and they are growing,” the former official told the paper, referring to electrical systems. “There were a lot last year.”
Intel Atom Turns One Year Old and Intel Announces Moorestown
This afternoon in Beijing celebrates the one-year anniversary of shipping the Atom processor for MIDs, and Intel senior VP Anand Chandrasekher announced two new Intel Atom Z series chips for Mobile Internet Devices. The two new Atom processors are the Z550 and Z515. The Z550 extends the performance of the MID product line to 2GHz with Intel Hyperthreading technology support, setting a new standard for the highest performance processor in the under-3-watt power envelope. The Z515 incorporates the new Intel Burst Performance Technology (Intel BPT), which enables the processor to run at 1.2GHz when performance is needed in existing small and sleek MID form factors. He also demonstrated for the first time our forthcoming Moorestown product, showing significantly more than the 10X power consumption improvement we have been forecasting.
Due in 2010, the Moorestown platform is comprised of a System on Chip (codenamed Lincroft) that integrates a 45nm Intel Atom processor core, graphics, video and memory controller, and a companion input/output (I/O) hub (codenamed Langwell). The platform will be accompanied by a new Moblin software version that is optimized to enable the rich, interactive, PC-like Internet experience along with cellular voice capabilities.
