Don’t Call It a Flying Car, But It Does Fly

Meet George Jetson! Oh, wait, perhaps not. The Terrafugia Transition is called a “roadable aircraft” by the company emphasizing it’s more agile in the air than on the ground. At least, it is supposed to be, and a maiden flight test showed that indeed it is. While many will call this a flying airplane, Terrafugia is quite clear in their FAQ.  Perfect for trips between 100 and 500 miles, the Transition is not designed to replace anyone’s automobile. Air-wise, where the Transition is more at home, it has a

Bat Hung onto Space Shuttle During Liftoff

A bat that was clinging to space shuttle Discoverys external fuel tank during the countdown to launch the STS-119 mission remained with the spacecraft as it cleared the tower, analysts at NASAs Kennedy Space Center concluded. Launch controllers spotted the bat after it had clawed onto the foam of the external tank as Discovery stood at Launch Pad 39A. The temperature never dropped below 60 degrees at that part of the tank, and infrared cameras showed that the bat was 70 degrees through launch.

Based on images and video, a wildlife expert who provides support to the center said the small creature was a free tail bat that likely had a broken left wing and some problem with its right shoulder or wrist. The animal likely perished quickly during Discoverys climb into orbit.

Streaming TV Can Be Profitable

Here’s some potentially good news for those of us who love to watch our favorite TV shows online: MTV Networks and ABC.com have achieved profitability with their latest online video efforts. Both networks currently have clear, aggressive strategies for distributing TV online—MTVN aims for a wide distribution while ABC is pushing a walled garden of high-quality streams. During a recent panel discussion on broadband video distribution, Greg Clayman, executive vice president of digital distribution and business

Google Boosts Chrome’s Speed with New Beta

Once again, Google is upping the ante in the browser speed wars. After taking the “beta” tag off of Google Chrome in December, the company has been updating two release channels: developer and stable. Now, the company is re-introducing the beta channel with the latest Chrome 2.0 beta release. Speed is a strong focus of this new release. According to the Google Chrome blog, the new beta version can process JavaScript 25% faster than the current stable channel version based on the V8 benchmark. When using the

The Wait for Firefox Mobile on WinMo Gets Shorter

Mozilla has just released the first beta of Fennec, a mobile version of the company’s popular Firefox web browser. The new beta isn’t Windows Mobile-ready quite yet, but its arrival only one month after the pre-alpha shows that Mozilla is moving forward at breakneck speeds to update and release their new mobile web solution.

Fennec v1.0b1 (beta 1) is chock-full of improvements, including faster panning, zooming and application start time, support for plug-ins, and the addition of TraceMonkey, a JavaScript engine.

At present, beta 1 of Fennec is only available for the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but if you’re anxious to see what you can expect from Firefox Mobile, you can also download a Windows version and take a test drive.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see a Fennec beta for Windows Mobile, but we’re (of course) hoping that it’s sooner rather than later.

AMD says Intel fabricated claims

n response to an Intel claim that AMD has breached a 2001 patent cross-license agreement between the two companies, AMD has released a statement indicating that Intel's action is an attempt to distract the world from the global antitrust scrutiny it faces. AMD added that should the matter proceed to litigation, the company will prove that Intel fabricated this claim to interfere with AMD's commercial relationships and thus has violated the cross-license.

Intel recently disclosed that it believes AMD has breached a 2001 patent cross-license agreement with Intel based on the fact that recent AMD spin-off Global Foundries is not a subsidiary under terms of the agreement and is therefore not licensed under the 2001 patent cross-license agreement. Intel also claims the structure of the deal between AMD and Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) breaches a confidential portion of that agreement. Intel said it has asked AMD to make the relevant portion of the agreement public, but so far AMD has declined to do so. AMD's breach could result in the loss of licenses and rights granted to AMD by Intel under the agreement, Intel said.
