Activision will consider acquisitions amid recession

Activision Blizzard, with $3 billion in cash and no debt, will consider acquisitions as the recession brings down the prices of potential targets, the company's top publishing executive said.

“The combination of Activision holding a fair amount of cash and presumably prices being depressed, not only for publicly traded companies, but also likely for new intellectual property licensing rights, should certainly create opportunities,” Mike Griffith said Tuesday in an interview in San Francisco.

Firefox 3.0.7 Released – Targets Security Issues

Mozilla on Wednesday released an update to the Firefox Web browser that its developers said fixes eight security issues found in Firefox 3.0.6, six of which were rated critical. The most serious of the vulnerabilities fixed in version 3.0.7 could allow attackers to run arbitrary code on a victim's computer, Mozilla warned in security advisories Wednesday.

The six critical flaws affect the browser's garbage collection–which monitors how Firefox modules use the computer's memory–as well as the browser's PNG libraries and in the layout and JavaScript engines. Updates for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux are available at the Mozilla site. Firefox 3 users will receive an update notification within 48 hours, or they can download the update manually by selecting “Check for Updates” from the Help menu.

Yahoo CEO interested in social networks, search

Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Carol Bartz said social network sites are a key area of interest for the Internet media company, even as it tries to figure out how to boost its Web search business. Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, Bartz suggested Yahoo might seek to partner with social networking companies rather than build its own products in this area.

Bartz repeated her philosophy that every business in Yahoo is up for examination as the company seeks to revive growth and better compete with Google Inc. While she opened the door to negotiations with Microsoft Corp about a search partnership, she stressed the importance of search data to Yahoo's advertising customers.

Dell XPS 625 Phenom II Gaming System

Dell’s new XPS 625 is their latest AMD-based creation, and is the first out of the Dell labs using the relatively new Phenom II processor. Initial reviews of AMD’s new chip have been favorable, as this new quad-core processor is slated to deliver roughly the same performance as Intel’s quad-core Core 2 processors at very tolerable price points. While it’s pretty clear that the Phenom II can’t quite crack Core i7 levels of performance in most usage scenarios, the question is, do most users really need that much

NVIDIA Mulls Its Own x86 CPU

Intel and NVIDIA aren’t exactly best buds right now, and this certainly isn’t going to help matters any. At the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference on Tuesday NVIDIA admitted it is considering entering the general purpose microprocessor arena, where it would compete directly with Intel. NVIDIA’s senior vice president of investor relations and communications, Michael Hara, was asked: “Can you provide a framework for us to think about whether — if or when NVIDIA would need to or want to get into the general
