Only technophiles would recognize this event, but at 3:31 PM PST on Friday the 13th, 2009, Unix time reached 1234567890. Unix time is the number of seconds since the beginning of the “Unix Epoch” at midnight UTC on January 1st, 1970 (not including leap seconds). Celebrations abounded (seriously!), but now(!) there is the dread of the Epochalypse. Anyone remember the Y2K scare? While that mostly fizzled, there is a similar scenario scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2038. Yep, that year, you’ll have the same

Twitter Accepts More Funds, Looks To Make Cash
It’s like a boy taking the training wheels off for the first time. Or a young lady going on her first date. Or a senior heading off to college. So far as we can tell, this is Twitter’s coming of age party. Yep — after receiving a very generous $250 million valuation late last month, the microblogging phenomenon has locked down even more capital. In a recent post to the Twitter, Inc. blog, the company proclaimed that it had increased active users by 900 percent in just a year, and while its web traffic is astounding,

The App Store Competition Cometh
There is no denying the popularity of Apple’s App store, which offers free and paid applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. By some reports, almost 21,000 apps are currently available for download from the App Store–a very impressive metric, considering that the App Store is only seven months old. But the iPhone is not the only smartphone with a centralized location from where users can download applications for their devices; and the marketplace for smartphone downloads is about to get a lot more crowded.
TZero Shuts Down, UWB Format Left In Limbo
It’s a sad day, friends. Or, a happy day, if you’re a devout supporter of AMIMON’s WHDI technology. For those who have been following the ultra-wideband protocol — which was sparsely used in a variety of wireless HD and wireless peripheral-related products — you’d know that TZero was pretty much the only company still keeping it alive. Late last year, both Intel and WiQuest (who were both big supporters early on, by the way) pulled out, leaving the UWB format in limbo. Now, sources are reportedly confirming
New Windows Mobile 6.5 Screenshots Appear Online
Thanks to the folks at pocketpc.ch, we now have a much better idea of what to expect from Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. The site has posted over 30 screenshots of WinMo6.5 and it looks like there’s a lot of finger-friendly goodness in store for Windows Phone users later this year.
The screenshots show the touchscreen, or Professional, version of Windows Mobile 6.5. The Today Screen has been significantly updated with a new full-screen wallpaper design and the sliding panel interface we’ve been expecting. The Programs menu (seen left) has the long-reported honeycomb interface allowing app selection with your finger; you can also change the order in which programs appear in this layout.
Windows Mobile 6.5 features additional changes in the phone portion of the OS with incoming call information and control sliders a la Apple’s iPhone.
In general, buttons and menus are larger and more finger friendly – a very welcome change. We’re looking forward to the new OS which should be officially announced next week.
We’ll keep you posted on new developments as they come.
