Hot on the heels of Core i7 Intel has just today announced the acceleration of their 32nm product ramp. Dubbed Westmere, the new processor family will have a smaller die geometry, increased performance across single and multithreaded usages (as compared to today’s Core 2 product family), and an integrated graphics engine in some versions, as well as on-board AES encryption processing support. The Westmere family will bring the technological advances of Nehalem to the mainstream processor
February 10 News from Around the Web
Noctua NH-U12P SE 1366 Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
“The biggest thing I can bring forward here is the fact that no matter what cooler you have the I7 is going to run warm. The key is finding the combination of heatsink and fans that meet your needs. As delivered from the manufacturers, both the Noctua NH-12P 1366 and TRUE 1366 are nice pieces in their own right. The performance of the Noctua NH-U12P in this test was what I would call excellent in the face of disaster. It delivered great temperatures by comparison and did so with virtually no noise. The NF-P12 fans run at a low 1300 R.P.M. and are practically inaudible. This initially caused me some concern with temperatures creeping into the 80+ Celsius range I was sure the computer had shut down multiple times due to overheating but was pleasantly surprised each time to see the fans chugging away doing their best to help dissipate the heat load generated by the Core I7 965, both at the default and overclocked frequencies.”
Dell Releases Latitude XT2 Multi-touch Tablet
Dell updated its Latitude XT convertible tablet with the new XT2 model featuring more than 11 hours of battery life (6-cell plus battery slice.) Like its predecessor, the XT2 incorporates multi-touch screen technology making it possible for you to use natural gestures like a pinch or tap for scrolling, panning, rotating, zooming, and more. What’s more, Dell’s integration of multi-touch utilizes the full display, not just the touchpad. In tablet mode, you can use the multi-touch screen to control the computer
Google’s Power to the People Project
Google wants to empower you with the knowledge of how your home appliances consume power. Combining grassroots efforts, “policy advocacy,” “developing consumer tools, and even investing in smart grid companies,” Google is looking to find ways to make consumers more informed about how they consume power. With this knowledge, Google hopes that people will use the information to find ways to cut back on their energy consumption in order to save money and lower their carbon emissions. Much of Google’s efforts in
MIcrosoft to Drop Extras from Windows 7 Ultimate
In a decision that’s bound to cause some chucking around the blogosphere, Microsoft has confirmed that although it’s going to have an Ultimate version of Windows 7, it will be ditching the much-derided “Ultimate Extras” it used as a selling point for Vista Ultimate. “Ultimate Extras” were supposed to be exclusive add-ons for Windows Vista Ultimate, but they never amounted to much of anything, and definitely not the cutting-edge extras that consumers had been led to expect. In a statement, Microsoft said: “Our
Intel Plans $7 Billion Investment On Chip Plants
We’ve always heard that the best way out of recession is to innovate through it, and it looks like Intel has heard that very same message. Amidst economic turmoil that led to sharply decreased sales (down 23 percent) and net income (down 90 percent) during Q4 2008, Intel is determined to continue its tradition of innovation in order to be on the bleeding edge once things get turned around. Announced this week, the chip maker has decided to invest some $7 billion over the next two years on chip plants (also known

EVGA’s GeForce GTX 295 Plus Tested and Burned In
A few weeks back, we took an in-depth look at the dual-GPU powered NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295. Just to recap a bit; the GeForce GTX 295 is NVIDIA’s current flagship graphics card that couples a pair of 55nm GT200 GPUs with 1792MB of frame buffer memory, culminating in what is ultimately the fastest, single graphics adapter on the market at this time. It appeared after about 5 months of work and fine tuning, NVIDIA was sick and tired of letting AMD’s Radeon HD 4870 X2 lead the pack as the fastest single graphics
Intel 32nm Westmere Desktop Processor Roadmap Exposed
Intel had a news briefing just moments ago in downtown San Francisco that involved a processor road map update presented by VP Steve Smith and Senior Fellow Mark Bohr. The highlight of the meeting was the discussion about new milestones for the 32nm manufacturing and progress toward future products. If you don't know about the 32nm Westmere core or upcoming Lynnfield, Clarksfield, Clarkdale, Arrandale or Gulftown processors you need to read on.
Trident’s Rugged Triton SSDs Can Take Abuse
Generally speaking, all solid state drives are pretty rugged. Or, at least they’re designed to withstand more severe shock and vibration than rivaling hard disk drives. But even in the SSD space, there’s a need for drives that can operate under extreme conditions, and that’s exactly where Trident Space & Defense comes in.Said outfit will be showcasing its newest Triton Series of ruggedized Solid State Drives at the Armed Forced Communications Electronics Association West 2009 later this week.
