MS KB Articles Get a “Fix It” Button

Microsoft has quietly begun adding Fix-it buttons to some of their Knowledge Base articles. The Fix-it buttons run a script which will automatically fix the problem associated in the KB article, according to a Beyond Binary report. There are only a limited number of KB articles which have such a button; around 100 or so. But assuming you trust Microsoft’s scripting abilities, it’s a lot easier than having to edit the registry or some such other mundane Windows activity manually. Here’s one example: if the Internet

Fujitsu To Discontinue HDD Head Business

While many may gloss over this discontinuation while focusing on the plethora of other pullouts in the industry, this one’s pretty significant in the world of hard disk drives. Fujitsu, a long time player in the HDD head business, has recently decided that it would be best if it let its rivals forge ahead without it jockeying for position. Effective March 31, 2009, said outfit will be axing its hard disk drive head business as part of a “broader strategic review of the HDD operations.” Currently, Fujitsu’s HDD

Intel phases out Core 2 Extreme QX9650 and QX9770 processors

The Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 and QX9770 were the flagship processors for Intel for many months, but it looks like they are about to be put out to pasture. Now that the Intel Core i7 series has launched a new Extreme series processor has taken the performance lead, which means these processors can be retired. It's always good to see a company move on, but boy those two processors were fun to run!

Intel informed system builders that it has begun phasing out the QX9650 (3.0 GHz) and QX9770 (3.2 GHz) desktop processors. Final orders will be taken on June 5 of this year and the final tray processors are expected to ship February 2, 2010, while boxed versions will ship until September of next year. Both CPUs have been removed from the official processor price list last December, when the Core i7 processor was introduced. The only Core-based 45 nm Extreme processor now available is the Skulltrail QX9775 CPU with LGA771 package.

Charter Implementing New Cable Download Caps For Internet Customers

Broadband Reports is reporting that they have learned that Charter will be updating their acceptable use policy (AUP) next week, setting the stage for clear usage caps and potential overage fees. A source familiar with the plans tells us Charter will be imposing a 100GB cap upon any Charter connection of 15Mbps or less, and a 250GB usage cap for broadband tiers “over 15 Mbps up to 25 Mbps.” This is bad news for those that stream HD content through the internet!

There will not initially be overage fees, but the new AUP reserves the right to charge “additional fees in accordance with Charter's then-current applicable rates.” If there's a company who could benefit from overage fees it's Charter — the carrier holds more than $20 billion in debt, and faces rumors of a looming bankruptcy protection filing.

DIY medical record keeping?

Imagine, if you will, having a basic checkup without even having to go to your doctor’s office. It’s not quite so extreme, but a partnership between IBM and Google makes that concept seem, perhaps, not so far-fetched. With software deveoped by IBM and Google Heath’s medical record database, a patient’s vital stats – heart rate, blood pressure, blood chemistry, for example – could be sent swiftly between home and the doctor’s office with just the click of a button or two.The project dovetails nicely with President
