Rather than risk being lost in the flurry of CES, Panasonic waited until today to unveil its latest sub-$300 cameras. Two of the new cameras are part of Panasonic’s FS-Series line, and feature a slim and compact build at a lower price than the company’s higher-end FX-Series. The third camera is part of Panasonic’s LS-Series line. This line isn’t quite as compact as some of the other lines, but it is more affordable. As a successor to the FS5, the Lumix DMC-FS15 will offer 12.1MP with a 5x optical zoom and a

Intel Reports Fourth-Quarter and Annual 2008 Results
Intel Corporation today reported fourth-quarter revenue of $8.2 billion, operating income of $1.5 billion, net income of $234 million and earnings per share (EPS) of 4 cents. The results included a billion-dollar negative impact from the previously announced reduction in the carrying value of the company's Clearwire investments. This is down 90% from a year earlier, so it goes to show just how hard the tech industry was hit when the economy took a dive.
“The economy and the industry are in the process of resetting to a new baseline from which growth will resume,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. “While the environment is uncertain, our fundamental business strategies are more focused than ever. Intel will continue to extend its manufacturing leadership, drive product innovation, develop new markets and implement operating efficiencies that have already taken more than $3 billion out of our ongoing cost structure since 2006. Intel has weathered difficult times in the past, and we know what needs to be done to drive our success moving forward. Our new technologies and new products will help us ignite market growth and thrive when the economy recovers.”
MySpace Building ebmail to Rival Hotmail, Yahoo
Another big name is about to enter the webmail market and would be the third-largest provider the day it launches, TechCrunch reported today, citing unnamed sources. All the reason it would be so big upon launch is because all MySpace users would be assigned an e-mail address of [username]@myspace.com. The social networking site has about 125 million active users (those who check in at least once a month), which would place it above Gmail and below Yahoo and Hotmail/Windows Live (a ComScore report from about
US Airways flight down in New York’s Hudson River
Emergency officials are responding to a downed plane in the Hudson River in New York City, according to the city fire and police departments. The FAA confirmed US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 headed from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, was down in the river following a failed takeoff. The U.S. Coast Guard said units were also responding, and a ferry on site was dropping life jackets into the water.
The plane approached the water at a gradual angle and made a big splash, according to a witness watching from an office building. “It wasn't going particularly fast. It was a slow contact with the water that it made,” the witness, Ben VonKlemperer, told CNN.
Microsoft Puts Out Live Search Mobile v4.0
A new version of Live Search Mobile has been released by Microsoft. Version 4.0 adds several new features to the free program, one of our favorites here at PPCC.
LocateMe allows you to view your location either by GPS positioning data or cell phone tower triangulation. Bird’s Eye View, which is similar to Google Street View, is a new way the program provides for viewing maps. Sadly, this feature isn’t available everywhere.
Other features include predictive text for typed searches and Mixed Query which allows you to search for locations in cities other than the one in which you are currently located.
You can download the latest version of Live Search Mobile, which works with Windows Mobile 5 or later (and select BlackBerry devices), right from your handheld at http://wls.live.com.
