Have a Safe and Happy Holidays

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and to be very careful while traveling as the weather across the nation isn't the best this week. I was driving to pick up some web server parts yesterday afternoon and it was raining, but the ground temperature was below freezing. That caused the roads to ice up even though it was warm enough to be raining. I was driving home on Interstate 70 and cars were wrecking all around me. I even managed to snap a picture of a box truck that slid on an overpass and sat across two guard rails. It was so bad there was even a 13 car accident about 10 miles past where I was driving that claimed a life, so be careful and see you back on the site in a couple days! Notebooks outship desktops for first time

Worldwide notebook computer shipments topped those of desktops for the first time ever in the third quarter, research group iSuppli said on Tuesday, calling it a “watershed event” for the industry. Shipments of notebook PCs surged nearly 40 percent to 38.6 million units, while desktop shipments fell 1.3 percent to 38.5 million. Overall, PC shipments rose 15.4 percent in the quarter to 79 million units.

Acer Inc shipped almost 3 million more notebooks in the third quarter than in the previous quarter, with the majority being netbooks, iSuppli said. The Taiwanese company is now the third largest PC company by market share at 12.2 percent, less than two percentage points behind second-place Dell Inc. Hewlett-Packard Co maintained its lead at No. 1, shipping 14.9 million units for an 18.8 percent market share.

Intel insists Atom only for Intel chipsets

NVIDIA's recent move to try to extend Intel's Atom ecosystem to its recently announced Ion platform appears to have been knocked back by Intel, according to a response primarily directed at PC manufacturers as seen by Digitimes. Not good news for NVIDIA, but you never know what will happen in the months to come.

Nvidia's push for the Ion platform, which combines its GeForce 9400 mGPU with the Intel Atom CPU, is heavily reliant on Intel being willing to abandon its current Atom pricing system. Under the existing scheme, Intel will only sell Atom CPUs and corresponding chipsets in a bundle, but if hardware vendors are unable to buy just the Atom CPU, the Ion platform becomes too expensive for most applications. Nvidia executives recently visited local PC makers, in an attempt to drum up support for allowing its MCP7A and MCP79 chipsets into the Atom ecosystem.

The End of an Era: Last VHS Tape Shipped

Just the mention of a VHS tape today is sure to bring back memories. Now, the once-popular home video format that brought us hours of entertainment is all but dead. In fact, the last major supplier of tapes, a warehouse run by Ryan Kugler, shipped its last truckload of VHS tapes sometime in October. According to Kugler, “It’s dead, this is it, this is the last Christmas, without a doubt. I was the last one buying VHS and the last one selling it, and I’m done. Anything left in warehouse we’ll just give away or

Mac vs. PC – Transformers Style

The news will probably be flowing a bit slower than usual for the next day or so, due to the Christmas Holiday. We’ll still do our best to be here if something exciting happens, but in the meantime, I have a fun little tid-bit to share, just to kill some time.If you can make it through the absolutely horrible acting in the first minute, I promise this video gets much cooler… Mac vs. PC — Transformers Style I have a sneaking suspicion most of you DIYers are going to agree with the blonde’s point of view, and

Notebooks Outsell Desktops Worldwide

According to market research company, iSuppli, this is the dawning of the age of the notebook. iSuppli makes this declaration because for the first time ever, notebook shipments worldwide have exceeded desktop shipments. This paradigm shift is marked by only a difference of about 100,000 units, but it follows a long trend of declining desktop PC growth and growing notebook sales for sometime now. Notebooks sales have exceeded desktop sales in the U.S. for a number of quarters now, but this is the first time

Dell Confirms the Adamo (More or Less)

We wrote earlier about the Dell Adamo, or at least, the Dell Adamo website and the various clues around the Web about what was rumored to be a MacBook Air competitor. It seems that there is now confirmation. It all started when the New York Times Bits blog noticed a blurb (since removed) at luxury lifestyle site Uptownlife.net that said:”Rumor has it that Dell is coming out with a computer called Adamo that will rival the MacBook Air. At press time, the company was keeping the product tightly under wraps, but
