Apple Admits Nvidia GPU Defect in MacBook Pros

The bruhaha over defective Nvidia mobile graphics chips keeps rolling along, even months after the initial headlines have faded. Despite Nvidia’s promises to Apple that its Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT-based MacBook Pros had dodged the bullet and were immune from the defect, Apple now counters that it wasn’t, in fact, so lucky: “In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that

YouTube Comments Gain Audio Preview

It’s hardly a game-changer, but it’s pretty cool. Anyone who’s looked at the comments on YouTube posts know that they are certainly not works of literary art. Well, if you heard your comment read back to you, would you still post it, with all its grammar and spelling errors? Perhaps not. YouTube has added an audio preview feature to its comments. They didn’t publicize it, so we only happened to notice it as we were going to comment on a video myself (which we don’t do that often). You can see it below. Our guess

Samsung SCH-i770 Coming Soon to Verizon Wireless?

i770

The numbers ‘i770’ have been swirling around Samsung since the ill-fated SGH-i770 clamshell touchscreen Windows Mobile phone was first discussed in 2006.  In 2008, our ‘i770’ curiosity has been aimed at the SCH-i770, which is thought to be a replacement for the current i760, and it now appears that the SCH-i770 is nearing release.

New information on the SCH-i770 has been posted on several tech blogs, and most recent posting include photos

Although the i770 was supposed to be released in Q3, which has clearly come and gone, we are now getting word that Verizon Wireless will release the handset by the end of the year.

Asustek planing touch panel Eee PCs

Asustek Computer is planning to launch touch panel Eee PCs in the first quarter of 2009, which the company expects will help drive sales further, according to Samson Hu, general manager of Eee PC business at Asustek. The company has not yet decided details of the models which will be updated but will reach a decision based on market demand. The company expects to showcase the products during CES 2009, Hu noted.

Hu also revealed that Asustek will launch dual-core Atom-based netbooks as soon as Intel begins shipping the CPUs. However, Intel has not yet confirmed a date on when this will happen. In addition to touch panel and dual-core Atom-based Eee PCs, president, Jerry Shen, revealed that the company will also release a model priced less than NT$10,000 (US$307) during 2009.

AMD Says Manufacturing Deal Does Not Violate Intel Processor Patents

The day after AMD announced a significant deal that will spin off its manufacturing facilities into a new joint venture company, AMD is defending its licensing agreement with Intel. In the wake of the deal, Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD to ensure the deal does not violate any patent agreements. An AMD spokesman said the deal does not impact the chip licensing agreement with Intel.

A few hours after the announcement, Intel made a statement that it was investigating whether the new company violates a chip licensing agreement it has with AMD. Specifically, the agreement allows AMD to use Intels x86 chip instruction set and in return, AMD pays Intel a royalty. The next day, Oct. 8, AMD fired back and charged that the new company does not violate any previous agreement with Intel.

AT&T Epix & Fuze Get Priced: $199 & $299

attlogo AT&T is getting ready to introduce at least two new Windows Mobile devices over the coming weeks, the Samsung Epix and the AT&T Fuze (HTC Touch Pro).  According to EngadgetMobile, the Epix will sell for $199; the Fuze will go for $299.  Both prices require a two-year agreement and may include some sort of rebate.

We’re expecting the Epix to be announced on or around October 23.  No hard date is available for the release of the Fuze, however it’s possible that it could also drop on the 23rd.  In any case, we assume the Fuze be announced before the end of 2008.
