We had to do a double take when we saw that a company called Cyberdyne recently demonstrated a “cyborg-type” “robot suit.” Our double take was quickly followed by yet another double take (would that be a quadruple take?) when we saw that Cyberdyne was calling the robot suit, “HAL.” (For those who are missing the Sci-Fi cultural references: Cyberdyne was the name of the fictional company from the Terminator movies that eventually gives rise to the artificial intelligence and cyborgs that nearly wipe out humanity;
Prevent Drunk Emailing with Mail Goggles
We have to admit, we keep having trouble typing the name of this. We keep typing Mail Googles. We also have to admit: if this were April 1st, this would be an obvious prank. That said …Anyone remember when on Friends Rachel got drunk and left Ross a voicemail telling him she had “closure” over their non-existent relationship? Well, that’s called “drunk dialing.” In a “not-that-useful-but-at-least-offbeat” Gmail Labs “feature,” Google is introducing Mail Goggles, which aim to prevent you from “drunk

Nvidia can’t shake MacBook, chipset unit rumors
Nvidia has become a Silicon Valley hot spot for rumors. One is tied to an analyst downgrade Monday, the other to the rumored Apple MacBook refresh. An analyst rekindled speculation Monday that the world's largest graphics chip supplier would sell off its chipset business, while rumors persist that the company would play a larger role in an expected refresh of the Apple MacBook.
Nvidia shares fell Monday after a Pacific Crest analyst issued a negative report on the company's prospects. In the report, the analyst said “our checks confirm” that Nvidia will exit the chipset business next year. Nvidia chipsets–sometimes referred to as MCPs–serve as supporting silicon for the company's graphics processors. In the past, Nvidia has denied that
Ford feature will let parents set limits for teens
So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor will give you the power to do something about it. The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.
The feature, called “MyKey,” will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said. Ford arrived at the 80-mph limit even though freeway speed limits are lower in most states because it wanted to leave a margin in case an unusual situation arises, Buczkowski said. In some states, freeway speed limits are above 70 mph, Sherwood said. “Just lopping it off at exactly 70 mph was felt to be too limiting,” Buczkowski said.
HIS and Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 Face Off
With the recent run of newer and more affordable graphics cards from ATI, it’s almost easy to forget that there’s already a sub-$200 frame-rate cruncher called the Radeon HD 4850. Based on the same RV770 chip as the more powerful, yet more expensive HD 4870, the HD 4850 ships with the same 800 stream processors, 40 texture units, and 16 ROPs that have made these cards such hot items. The main area where they differ, other than clock speeds, is in regard to memory. While the HD 4870 ships with high-end GDDR5
