Securities Fraud Class Action Filed Against NVIDIA Corp.

The law firm of Shalov Stone Bonner & Rocco LLP has filed a securities fraud class action on behalf of all investors who purchased or otherwise acquired the common stock of NVIDIA Corp., between November 8, 2007, and July 2, 2008, inclusive. The lawsuit is pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and names as defendants NVIDIA and the Company's CEO and CFO during the Class Period. That doesn't sound like good news for NVIDIA!

Specifically, the complaint alleges that, during the Class Period, the defendants issued a series of misrepresentations and omissions that actively concealed and failed to disclose the unusually high failure rates of NVIDIA's mobile video adapters and the impact of these defects on the Company's financial condition and results and future business prospects. When the defendants belatedly revealed this information on July 2, 2008, NVIDIA's stock plummeted, and the Company's market capitalization was promptly reduced by over $3 billion.

Symantec Launches (Debloated?) 2009 Products

In July, Symantec opened its 2009 security products to public beta, promising that they would no longer be the performance hogs they have been in the past. You may know that Symantec’s latest versions of their security products have been criticized over their memory footprint and CPU usage. Of course, there’s also the activation issue (the software must be activated), but that’s another point of contention. So this year Symantec focused on speed and resources, calling it a “zero-impact” performance goal. And

Michael Dell buys $100 million in Dell stock

Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Inc., bought about $100 million of the computer maker's stock last week, his second such buying spree in the past three months. Shares in the world's second-largest maker of personal computers are trading near their 52-week low.

Dell bought nearly 4.9 million shares of the company he founded in two separate transactions last week, according to a regulatory filing from the company Monday. On Thursday, Dell bought 3.5 million shares at $20.42 each, and Friday he bought 1.378 million shares at $20.67 apiece, according to filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Dell, who is also chairman of the Round Rock, Texas-based company, had previously bought about $100 million worth of stock back in July.

TSMC, UMC slowing down 12-inch fab expansion

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), and other foundries are slowing their 12-inch fab expansion, showing no signs of active equipment move-in for their ongoing 12-inch projects, according to sources with equipment suppliers. Although TSMC has maintained that the fourth and fifth stages of expansion to its 12-inch Fab 12 at the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) are proceeding as scheduled, the sources claimed that the world's number one pure-play foundry remains cautious and conservative about placing equipment orders for the project.

UMC has completed the shell for its 12-inch Fab 12B at the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), but no volume production equipment has been installed, the sources said. Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has also decided to slow down capacity expansion at its 12-inch Fab7, the sources disclosed. The sources commented that it is likely that the foundries will leave the completed shells of their new 12-inch fabs empty for a while until demand picks up. UMC has reported that its August 2008 sales declined 4.4% sequentially to NT$8.17 billion (US$256.22 million).
