US Border patrol Allowed to Seize iPods & Laptops

It is now being reported by several outlets that the Department of Homeland Security has been granted the power to seize travelers “device(s) capable of storing information in digital or analog form,” including hard drives, flash drives, cell phones, iPods, pagers, beepers, and video and audio tapes” as well as “all papers and other written documentation.” If you are traveling in and out of the US, you might want to take a close look at the this new policy as it allows random warrantless search and seizures at the boarder.

Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.

Thermaltake Releases the New RAM Cooler – RamOrb

Thermaltake have taken their Orb design of coolers and applied it to a RAM heatspreader, complete with fan, for an interesting looking RAM cooler.

Thermaltake RAMorb Cooler

As a new member of the most famous Thermaltake Orb cooler series, RamOrb has been designed with a perfect heat transmitting channel to take heat away from the memory; consisting of a copper heatpipe to effectively conduct the heat to the copper fins for heat dissipation, and the extra 5cm fan works strongly to further accelerate the heat dissipation process. Other than the excellent structure, RamOrb is also angle adjustable for the enhancement of mechanical compatibility; and the side flow design integrates well with the chassis air flow to further push the cooling performance to the maximum.

Apple Continues to Vacillate Over Tethering App

Apple seems unable to make up its mind over NetShare, the iPhone tethering application which first appeared, disappeared, reappeared, and has now vanished again from their App Store. In what could only be termed as bizarre, Nullriver’s NetShare application has been removed once from the iPhone App Store, only to reappear and then disappear again. Apple has not released a statement as to why it’s been pulled, but one can only speculate that it in some way violates the SDK or perhaps Apple has put the app back

Shining New Light On Optical Computing

Practical optical computing is like unicorn hunting to researchers. It promises all sorts of wonderful effects like superfast speeds and less waste heat. But messing about with photons instead of electrons posed challenges that seemed insurmountable, especially the limit on the size of the conduit needed to carry it. Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have come up with a way to at least partially overcome this hurdle by compressing light to fit inside spaces formerly thought impossible.
