DHS Can Now Hold Laptops Indefinitely at Borders
You may recall the case of Sebastien Boucher? He was stopped in 2006 while crossing the U.S. – Canadian border and charged with transporting child pornography on his laptop across the border. Unfortunately for the prosecutors, the data on the laptop is encrypted, and he now refuses to enter the necessary password to allow access to the files. Additionally, a judge ruled late last year that he could not be compelled to reveal the password.Based on this ruling, and the recent policies enacted

The Internet Is For Pr0n. Pay Up
Since very few people on the visible side of the pornography industry are wearing any clothes, it seems like it would be a very casual business. But it’s about as organized and avaricious as any business on the Internet, and it’s getting angry. Many pornographers have banded together and formed the PAK Group, a sort of naked RIAA or MPAA, and they’re preparing an onslaught of litigation on anybody they can find that’s pirating their intellectual property and making a buck on it. …styled after the ever-so-popular

Touch Diamond Coming to Sprint this Month?
Could the HTC Touch Diamond debut on the Sprint wireless network later this month? Yes, according to an online article in The China Post online. The article, dated August 2, 2008, ends by stating that the Touch Diamond, which is already available for purchase in Asia, will be sold “through Sprint Nextel Corp. in August.” This availability timeframe isn’t stated as a prediction, but as an unremarkable fact, but it’s the first time we’ve seen indication that the Diamond would become available so soon in the U.S.
The Touch Diamond is similar in design to the upcoming Touch Pro, but lacks a sliding keyboard and has 4GB of internal flash memory, the first Windows Mobile handset to include such storage. A GSM version of the Touch Diamond is available for purchase on eBay.
NVIDIA Responds To Allogations on Leaving The Chipset Business
NVIDIA has responded to the DIGITIMES news post by sending out this statement directly to media sources through e-mail. The e-mail was hsort and to the point. It basically says that NVIDIA is staying in the chipset business and has no plans on leaving as they are gaining market share.
1. The story on Digitimes is completely groundless. We have no intention of getting out of the chipset business.
2. In fact, our MCP business is as strong as it ever has been for both AMD and Intel platforms:a. Mercury Research has reported that the NVIDIA market share of AMD platforms in Q2 08 was 60%. We have been steady in this range for over two years.
b. SLI is still the preferred multi-GPU platform thanks to its stellar scaling, game compatibility and driver stability.
c. nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide due to its compelling combination of memory performance, overclocking, and support for SLI. In fact, a recent article on Toms Hardware recently came to the same conclusion: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/NVIDIA-790i-SLI,1977-29.html3. We're looking forward to bring new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms.
Nvidia said to be quitting chipset business; company denies claims
Digitimes is reporting that Nvidia has decided to throw in the towel and quit the chipset business, sources close to the situation at one of Taiwan's top motherboard makers have revealed. As the story is told, Nvidia called a meeting earlier this week with its motherboard partners to gauge support for it continuing to develop chipsets in the future. We don't agree with this one bit and have contacted NVIDIA to get a response this Friday afternoon.
The loss of its chipset business would have a significant impact on Nvidia's GPU business in the short-term. Reception to the nForce 200 chip (BR04) which will enable SLI technology on Intel X58 motherboards has been lukewarm at best, with many makers saying they will not bother adding the chip on their boards. This means Nvidia needs to find a way of licensing and enabling multi-GPU support on motherboards using Intel and/or AMD chipsets fast. Otherwise it will have to cede the top-end of the graphics card market to AMD, which now has the benefit of Crossfire.
