Will Ymail lure you to Yahoo! Email? For that matter, will Rocketmail? Starting this morning, Yahoo! will be opening up ymail.com and rocketmail.com email domains for users. Why?It’s obvious that if you wanted to get the email address john@yahoo.com, you couldn’t. Saturation has meant that if you want to get an email address at Yahoo!, or for that matter, Gmail, you frequently have to resort to adding numbers or other such differentiating characters. What a pain, right?Today, Yahoo Inc. will
Intel Planning On Ramming DRAM Into The Chip
Intel has been tinkering around with DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) cells, reducing their size and getting rid of the capacitors that were necessary components of their tiny integrated circuit. In doing so, they may have demonstrated a way to remove the SRAM (Static Random Access Memory)cells from the processor and replace them with the simplified DRAM, greatly improving bandwith. Intel said that it was able to fine tune its DRAM design and hit a physical clock of 2 GHz using a 65 nm manufacturing process.
AMD Radeon HD 4850 512MB Video Card Preview – Sapphire
The scheduled release for ATI's upcoming RV770 parts, the Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870, was scheduled for next week, but it seems that it got bumped up to today. Some European e-tailer has started to sell cards and AMD/ATI had no choice other than to remove our gag order on the video cards we already have. Read on to check out our preview and see what NVIDIA did to spoil it – GeForce 9800 GTX+!!!

NVIDIA Users Can Run Folding @ Home – Windows GPU2 6.12 beta 6 Released
If you run F@H you'll be happy to know that the NVIDIA beta client has been released, which means you can fold on your GPU. The initial release works on Windows only, but this is a great start. If you haven't folded for a team before be sure to check out the Legit Folding Team under team number 38296!
Note that this is still a very early beta and there's lots to fix. In particular, we need to correct some issues with the visualization and the EUE handling. However, we've got that in our roadmap and should be rolling that out over the next few weeks or so (hopefully sooner, but it may be longer depending on how tricky these bugs are to handle).
Worlds Fastest Supercomputers Employ AMD Opteron CPUs
At the International Supercomputing Conference, AMD today announced that its AMD Opteron processors have helped deliver many of the top performing supercomputers in the world. For the first time ever, AMD technology plays a role in the number one supercomputer in the world and this same processor technology that helps drive the number one supercomputer is also readily available for business and personal computing.
This current TOP500 list, with its first ever petascale performance, not only represents a milestone in scientific computing but also demonstrates the relevance of scalability and balanced system design in high performance computing (HPC). It also points to heterogeneous computing as an emerging and necessary step for the industry, said Randy Allen, senior vice president, Computation Solutions Group, AMD. AMD and its many supercomputing partners, including top tier OEMs, recognize that for heterogeneous computing to be successful, collaboration among industry leaders is critical. The performance demonstrated on this list by AMD and our partners exceeds what any single solution has ever been able to achieve and we believe this tightly coupled innovation will become more prevalent to the benefit of HPC, as well as business and personal computing customers.
KISTI Supercomputing Center Uses NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 Graphics
Today, NVIDIA announced that the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information Supercomputing Center has selected NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 graphics cards to power the visual computing performance in its 146-computing node, high-definition visualization system. We actually have a picture of them installing the cards, which is pretty cool.
Koo Gee Bum, at KISTI explains why the Center selected NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 to optimize the high-performance visuals: We first considered using a less-powerful graphics card to drive our large-scale visualization system, but we soon realized that achieving advanced performance would require an advanced graphics solution. The obvious choice was NVIDIA Quadro graphics. With Quadro graphics cards in our systems, we achieve far superior performance over general-use graphics and can deliver an outstanding visual experience for the Center.
CoolIT Systems Announces VGA Cooler for the NVIDIA GTX280 Video Card
CoolIT Systems just announced the availability of the NV200 VGA Coldplate that is compatible with the new GeForce GTX280 and GTX260 cards recently announced by NVIDIA. The solution features a single slot, high performance liquid cooling solution that effectively cools the GPU, RAM, nVio Chip and VR that, when mated with CoolITs award-winning liquid cooling technology, provides extreme cooling to achieve optimal performance for the GTX280 in single card or SLI setup.
There is an insatiable demand in the enthusiast and gaming markets for high performance graphics cards remarks Geoff Lyon, CEO of CoolIT Systems. By keeping up with todays newest graphics cards, CoolIT can enable extreme performance dropping the temperature significantly to enhance the already stellar performance of these cutting-edge NVIDIA cards adds Lyon. The CoolIT Systems NV200 VGA Coldplate is now available with the VGA Reference solution, 120mm Radiator and will soon be available as a stand alone product for the DIY market.
Microsoft Searches for Some Yahoos
Can’t buy the company? Can’t buy the search technology? Well, how about buying the talent? Wednesday Microsoft placed a full-page ad for “search jobs” in (gasp!) an honest-to-goodness hard copy paper, The San Jose Mercury-News. Despite the ubiquity of the San Francisco Chronicle, for Silicon Valley, the Merc is the paper.”There are now very few companies that remain truly committed to defining the future of search and online advertising,” the ad reads. “Microsoft is one of them.”Microsoft’s not-so-subtle dig
Over 8 Million Firefox 3 Downloads in 24 Hours
Despite running into a few glitches at the start of the record-setting attempt for the most software downloaded in 24 hours, approximately 8.3 million full copies of Firefox 3 were downloaded during the first 24 hours of its availability. The Mozilla folks are working with the blokes from Guinness World Records to determine if in fact a true world record has been set. As there is no previously established official record for the most software downloaded in a day, the record is likely to keep. We’ll drink to
