NVIDIA Adds the 9800 GTX+ and PhysX

On Thursday, the same day that AMD unveiled – early – its 4800 series of cards (because some etailers were already selling the card), NVIDIA decided it just had to unveil its own new card, as well as some other good news.NVIDIA’s new card is the GeForce 9800 GTX+ GPU, an overclocked 9800 GTX, but really the 55nm refresh of the G92. NVIDIA increased default clock/shader speeds: from 675MHz to 738MHz and from 1688MHz to 1836MHz respectively. Memory speeds for this card will be 1100MHz, similar to the existing

The Modern Computer Turns Sixty Today

Ask the trivia question: What was the first computer? Most people would immediately answer: ENIAC. But ENIAC wasn’t really the prototype of the modern computer, as it couldn’t be reprogrammed to perform different tasks without taking it apart and rewiring it. A much more likely candidate for the first computer that resembles what we think of today when we say “computer” was a British behemoth called “Baby,” and it’s sixty years old today. The memory gave programmers a total of 1024 bits, or 128 bytes, to play

The battle between ATI and NVIDIA reached a tense moment today when ATI removed the gag order on the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card by more than a week. NVIDIA was trying to spoil the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 by launching an ultra secret graphics card called the GeForce 9800 GTX+! NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ Is 55nm – NVIDIA Pulls A Fast One

NVIDIA announced the GeForce 9800 GTX+ this morning when ATI announced the Radeon HD 4850. We covered the Radeon HD 4850 here and have since worked out our drivers issue and the card is being benchmarked along with the GeFOrce 9800 GTX+! We pulled off the heat sink on the GeForce 9800 GTX+ and saw something we didn't expect, a 55nm GPU looking back at us. Seems NVIDIA has been working hard lately and was able to shrink their G92 die down. No wonder the MSRP on the card is $229. Check out the pictures below and head to the forums to comment. At NVIDIA, we have always taken care of the value conscious gamer. After all, we invented the perfect gamers card with the GeForce 2 MX in 2000. At $229, it offers unbeatable value for value conscious gamers.

Netflix to Axe Family-Friendly Profiles Feature

UPDATE: We heard back from Steve Swasey, Vice President, Corporate Communications for Netflix. Swasey explained that a “very, very, very small minority” of Netflix users actually use the Profiles feature. When we commented that he used the word “very” three times, he joked that a few more “very’s” might actually be applicable. He would not comment, however, on what the actual percentage is of Netflix users who use Profiles. Swasey also pointed us to today’s post on the Netflix Community Blog, where a Netflix

As many of you are no doubt aware, AMD is about to release a new line of ATI Radeon graphics cards based on the GPU that was internally codenamed RV770.  Cards based on the GPU were supposed to launch next week, on June 25 to be specific, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, we are able to offer you some preliminary information and benchmark scores a little early.Like the RV670 used on the Radeon HD 3800 series, the RV770 GPU powering the Radeon HD 4850 is manufactured on TSMC’s 55nm process node.

June 19 News from Around the Web

Find reviews from around the web by visiting our forums! The following comes from TweakTown's MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard Review:

“Today we have an early market sample of MSIs P45 Platinum which is their top of the range board, this designed to compete with both ASUS and GIGABYTEs ultra high-end P45 offerings. While it doesnt have the full retail packaging included, weve confirmed with MSI that its the final revision board in our labs.

For our comparison today, we are pitting the MSI P45 Platinum against our oldest but most impressive P35 board we have, GIGABYTEs P35 DQ6. Both are based on DDR2 memory which make these systems equally matched apart from the change in chipset.”

The Future Isn’t Invisible, But It’s Real Quiet

The idea of being invisible has captivated scientists and comic-book writers alike for many years. As Einstein told us, it’s going to be pretty hard to do. But it’s somewhat easier to make something invisible to sound waves. Researchers in Spain have developed  a material that directs sound waves around an object so that they re-form on the opposite side with no degradation. Of course the military would  be interested in the material; your submarine would be invisible to Sonar if it used such a material,
