ASE Labs reviews the VIA EPIA-SN1800! Find this and other reviews by visiting our forums!

” The EPIA series from VIA has really come a long way since its initial inception years ago. When the series was first released, it was a unique formfactor. The problem is that it was slow and the expandability was not there. Fast forward a few years and the later designs are nothing like what it was. You get speed and expandability in a great size. If Windows is your thing, this board is Vista certified. “

Intel Announces Intel ‘Atom’ Brand Name for New Low-Power CPUs

The Intel Atom processor will be the name for a new family of low-power processors designed specifically for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and a new class of simple and affordable Internet-centric computers arriving later this year. Together, these new market segments represent a significant new opportunity to grow the overall market for Intel silicon, using the Intel Atom processor as the foundation. The company also announced the Intel Centrino Atom processor technology brand for MID platforms, consisting of multiple chips that enable the best Internet experience in a pocketable device.

The Intel Atom processor is based on a new microarchitecture designed for small devices and low power consumption, Intel said. The chip is less than 25 square millimeters, and 11 of the chip's dies — the slivers of silicon with 47 million transistors each — would fit in an area the size of a U.S. penny. The new chips, previously code-named Silverthorne and Diamondville, are made on Intel's 45 nanometer chipmaking technology and slated for introduction toward the middle of this year.

Dell to push its entry-level notebooks in low-cost PC market

Dell will let the entry-level segment of its consumer-based Inspiron and enterprise-based Vostro notebooks tackle the low-cost PC market, according to Stephen Felice, president of Dell's operations in Asia Pacific and Japan. As for products like the Eee PC, Felice thinks Dell will likely deliver a few similar solutions, but the company has not yet decided upon its strategy.

Dell expects its performance in Asia Pacific markets including Japan will maintain double digit growth in 2008. The company is preparing to launch twice the amount of notebook products it did in 2007. Additionally the company will switch from its previous global launch strategy, and begin launching products tailored for each local market, noted Felice. The current sales ratio between notebook and desktop PCs in Asia Pacific markets is 1:3, while in all other markets it is already even, indicating that there is potential in the Asia Pacific for low-cost notebook products.

Microsoft to expand its Web services for businesses

Microsoft Corp, faced with Web rivals looking to poach its business customers, said on Sunday it plans to broaden the availability of its online services for e-mail and collaboration software.

Last year, Microsoft started subscription-based online services to run its Exchange corporate e-mail program and SharePoint collaboration software on Microsoft's own computer systems as an alternative to customers buying their own hardware to run licensed software.

Microsoft initially limited those services to companies with more than 5,000 workers, but the company said it will now offer the service to businesses of all sizes in the second half of 2008, after a testing period. The company did not disclose how much it will charge customers for the services.
