A massive volume of telecommunications data flows through undersea cables. We’ve seen the havoc that’s created when one of them is severed, and it looks like the middle-east and western Asia are now experiencing the trouble created when 4 of them are damaged in a little less than a week.Having one cable damaged is unusual, 2 or more in the same time period is very odd, but 4 is virtually unprecedented.“Most telecommunications experts and cable operators say that sabotage seems unlikely, but no one knows

Grisoft is Grisoft no longer
It seems name recognition can be a definite selling tool! Grisoft is changing their name to AVG Technologies. AVG(Anti Virus by Grisoft) is one of the most recognized names on the internet for Anti Virus Software!
GRISOFT, developer of AVG virus-busting software and the like is to change its name.
While few have heard of Grisoft, more have heard of AVG it seems, so Grisoft is out and AVG Technologies is in.
Overclocking shifts from hobby to profession
I remember a time not that long ago that OverClocking was a mystery or dark art to most and then it became a needed skill for gamers! Now it seems to have evolved into a profession with the likes of Fugger, k|ingp|n and Shamino at the top of the pack! Those who are into performance computers at all will recognize these names immediately! They are the ones who have been breaking all the OverClocking records and getting paid to do it!
OVERCLOCKING a high-end computer is, in a way, like speed-tuning an already fast car. In both cases, you'd go for pushing up top models, rather than, say, speeding up a Pentium III – or a Yugo – these days.
Both activities involve a tremendous amount of adjustments to both the engines, the surrounding hardware and to the, well, control system. Cooling a CPU has become as sophisticated, if not more, as cooling a twin-turbo V8 engine. And, both activities are, at least at the top end, getting prohibitively expensive for most of the 'general public'.
The only major differences are that computer tuning evolves muchfaster – as do computers, after all – and has somewhat less risk to one's life and limb. The chances of being scarred by pouring dry ice, or accidentally drinking a cup of LN2 instead of your Evian, or even getting fried by some loose electrical wire there, are lower than slamming yourself at 300+ km/h into a wall while trying to tame an uncontrollable overtuned petrol-laden beast.
Open a Roadside Toilet in Finland? SMS!
This is even worse than a pay toilet! In Finland, you’d better have a cell phone if nature calls. As a result of continued and endemic vandalism, the Finnish Road Administration has developed a system which allows travellers to open the doors to roadside toilets only by sending a SMS message to the number given by the Road Administration. The new system was introduced in January in the rest areas along Highway 1 in Paimio and Salo near Turku, following numerous breakages, arson attempts, and thefts in the buildings

Consumer Reports’ Tests of HDTVs Show Quality Up & Prices Down
It seems that excuses for not buying that HDTV are running short. Advice from Consumer Reports after testing over 100 plasma, LCD, and rear-projection TVs for its March issue show some of the best picture quality in years overall. Consumers Reports also indicate that prices are down by almost 40% on some top models. This might be the time to start finally looking for your HDTV.
Consumer Reports notes that there are three major considerations when buying an HDTV: the type – LCD, plasma or rear-projection, the size of the screen, and whether it's worth paying a premium to step up from 720p to 1080p resolution. CR recommends considering a 1080p model first, especially if price is not an issue.
Ship arrives to fix Internet cable in Persian Gulf
A repair ship began work Tuesday at the site where an Internet cable was cut last week in the Persian Gulf, and a second vessel was to arrive later that day at the spot north of Egypt where two other cables were cut just two days earlier, FLAG Telecom said. The cuts have disrupted Internet services across a large swath of the Middle East and India, slowing down businesses and hampering personal Internet usage.
There has been wide speculation that the cuts were caused by ships' anchors dragged along the bottom of the sea in stormy weather. But Egypt's telecommunication ministry said Sunday no ships were registered near the location when the first cut in the cables occurred, north of the Egyptian port of Alexandria.
Adobe fixes undisclosed vulnerabilities in Reader
Adobe released on Wednesday an update that fixes vulnerabilities in its widely used Reader document viewing program. Users are urged to upgrade to version 8.1.2, available for download on Adobe's Web site.
Adobe has not given out details of the vulnerabilities, even though the company has a section on its Web site detailing security advisories for Reader. That could indicate that the vulnerabilities are fairly serious and could result in a compromised PC, said Thomas Kristensen, chief technical officer for Secunia, a security vendor in Denmark.
