Scan Checks At Home. Buy Your Own Toaster

I remember the good old days when banks would offer new customers gifts like toasters or other housewares when you opened up an account. Of course, the good old days weren’t really very good, because you had to stand in line at the bank fairly often instead of using direct deposit, internet banking, credit and debit cards, and ATMs to manage your finances remotely. The final reason to visit a bank regularly might become a thing of the past, as CheckFree Corp. is equipping banks with the tech they need to allow

Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Duke

3D Realms made the mistake of speaking to mainstream media, meaning that what they felt was a “no comment” answer did not translate properly.  No, Duke Nukem Forever does not have a release date.I’d like to address the article the Dallas Business Journal put up today. In what appears to be an unfortunate turn of events, there seems to have been some confusion between what was ‘off the record’ and what was not. I suppose we’re used to dealing with gaming press and not mainstream press. Lesson learned. While

Windows Vista SP1 RTM Leaks to the Web

Seriously, is anyone surprised?Paying customers may not get their hands on Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 for weeks, but pirates can download the brand-new code for either today, according to searches at several BitTorrent trackers. The RTM, or release to manufacturing, versions of both operating systems can easily be found on BitTorrent tracker sites such as the Pirate Bay, which has made them available since yesterday. One torrent of Microsoft Corp.’s newest server operating system,

MIT: Menopausal Women Potential Supercomputers

Researchers at MIT have developed chip architecture that runs on 70 percent less voltage than a conventional processor. The savings in power consumption would have profound effects on the battery life you could expect from portable devices. They may even require only movement and body heat to power chip-enabled sensors and communication devices. “It will extend the battery lifetime of portable devices in areas like medical electronics,” said Anantha Chandrakasan, a professor of electrical engineering at MIT.

AMD B3-Stepping Opterons, Helping Pirates?

According to a forum post at the IsoHunt website, the good folks at AMD were nice enough to hook up the admins with a pair of pre-production B3-stepping Opteron 2352 processors, what appear to be the first processors of their type to be “out in the wild”.  AMD’s B3 stepping is supposed to fix the TLB errata affecting current quad-core Opteron and Phenom processors.  But what’s more interesting is that IsoHunt – a site that facilitates piracy – apparently got the processors directly from AMD to power

Bing! You’ve Got (Someone Else’s) Mail. Print It

All cubicle workers have stories about the time they hit “Reply All” instead of “Reply” and embarrassed themselves in the office. But in what might be the mother of all misdirected e-mail disasters, a lawyer representing drugmaker Eli Lilly in confidential settlement talks with the government had both Bradford Berenson, who is her co-counsel, and Alex Berenson, who is a New York Times reporter, in her address book. You can see where this is going.Alex Berenson logged on to find an internal “very comprehensive

Rumor: AMD Stepping Up 45nm Timetable?

As with all rumors, please take the following news item with a  grain of salt until we can receive official confirmation or denial from AMD.For those of you who’ve been hoping for a more competitive high-end CPU landscape, it seems that your wishes might be met as early as the end of this year:“…the inputs from trusted Far Eastern friends about the 45 nm desktop parts say that, if AMD does its job right, we’re gonna have a quad-core 6MB cache part running at 3.2 GHz with DDR2-1066 memory a few months

Starting in May, sellers will no longer be able to give buyers negative, or even neutral feedback.EBay said problems were occurring, and slowing down trade, when buyers left negative comments about sellers who then retaliated with their own views. From May, those selling on eBay will not be able to leave unfavourable or neutral messages about buyers. The move, which will affect users worldwide, has angered many sellers.Sellers say it will leave them unprotected. We can certainly understand the fear of leaving
