Beatles Might Become Guitar Heroes Again

Tired of playing Trogdor and Freebird over and over? Maybe help is on the way. Representatives of the remaining Beatles are in discussions with the makers of both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games. Activision and MTV Games are after a deal for the most sought-after catalog of music ever. A final deal would be worth several million dollars, according to a person familiar with the talks, and could be reached in a matter of weeks. However, it would have first to win the blessing of both Apple Corps, the

Sony’s Euro Boss Says Disc Media Will Die

Whether you like it or not, let’s face it, disc media is just plain getting old.  Further, “the power of the network” continues to rise and downloadable multimedia content continues to become more and more pervasive.  Take a quick vitals check on companies like BlockBuster Video and you’ll know why the folks at Netflix are running to head this one off at the pass as well.  It’s not rocket science people (actually it’s called photonics, which is easily as complex), the fatter your pipe gets, the

Petaflop Super Computer Runs Game Console CPU

When it comes to Supercomputing, historically, the top dog on the circuit has been IBM’s BlueGene/L with its 478+ teraflop (trillions of floating point ops/sec) horsepower, at the ready for solving some of the world’s most critical problems and calculations.  Applications, like those being researched at the US Department of Energy, take enormous resources.  As is the case with the DOE’s research in simulation of how nuclear materials will age over time, predicting little things like how safe US nuclear

“Street View Hookers” Spice Up the Web

Since its unveiling in May of 2007, Google’s Street View has hit a few bumps in the road, including being told to “keep out” of an entire town, to being sued over privacy by a Pennsylvania couple, to being told to stay out of military bases. This particular incident is more humorous than anything else. Who is standing at the corner of 3186 San Pablo Ave. in Emeryville, near Oakland, California? Some think they may be working women, coining the nickname “Streetview Hookers.”Google Street View launched May

Microsoft Might Have Saved Your WoW Gold

Microsoft’s security updates for June seem to be having a profound effect in the ongoing battle against crooks who steal passwords and usernames, then use their ill-gotten info to cash in the imaginary gold MMORPG players accumulate for real money. One password stealer, called Taterf, was detected on 700,000 computers in the first day after the update. That’s twice as many infections as were spotted during the entire month after Microsoft began detecting the notorious Storm Worm malware last September.”These

Jammie Thomas Might Get Another Chance

You might remember Jammie Thomas, the Minnesota woman who lost a court case over music sharing and was ordered to pay the recording industry $222,000 for copyright violations related to sharing songs.  Despite the fact that it was never proven that she downloaded any songs, she was convicted of sharing the songs from her PC.  Ah, but they also never proved that anyone had in fact downloaded anything from her PC, which is the crux of the matter. On Friday the Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a brief

AMD to launch low-cost PC processor by year-end

AMD has recently notified its partners it is developing a processor to enter the low-cost PC market alongside Intel's Atom and Via Technologies' Nano CPUs. The new CPUs will be officially launched by the end of this year, while related netbook products will begin shipping in the first half of 2009, according to sources at PC makers.

AMD's low-cost PC processor will be based on the company's previous-generation K8 architecture and will support 64-bit instructions. The CPUs will be a single-core model with a frequency of 1.2GHz and will be manufactured on the company's 65nm process. AMD expects its low-cost PC processor to be priced slightly lower than Intel's Atom and has started negotiating with Micro-Star International (MSI), Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and vendors in China to win orders.
