CNN Can Breath Easy

The proposed cyber-attack against CNN has been called off, but it probably just goes to prove their initial point regarding basic rights issues such as freedom of speech & freedom of the press.  If you haven’t followed the story up until now, here’s a little background:”Pro-China hackers had called for the attack in protest of the news network’s coverage of Tibet, which they believe has been overly critical of China.  Participants had been instructed to flood CNN’s Web site with Internet traffic in hopes

We’re Number Two! We’re Number Two!

It was almost inevitable that China or India would eventually surpass the US in the total number of Internet users. Both countries have about four times the population of the United States. China already has the most cellphone users, and now it has the most people online as well. The number of Chinese on the Internet hit more than 220 million as of February, according to estimates from official Chinese statistics by the Beijing-based research group BDA China. The government is likely to confirm the leap at its

Ballmer Calls Vista A Work In Progress

Vista certainly had a less-than-smooth delivery, and there are still lingering issues that keep some away.   Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently addressed the issue in a speech he gave at Microsoft’s Most Valuable Partners conference. Here’s an excerpt:“Windows Vista: A work in progress. [Laughter, applause.]  A very important piece of work, and I think we did a lot of things right, and I think we have a lot of things we need to learn from.  Certainly, you never want to let five years go between releases.  Can

The next-generation Eee PC is due to hit shore shelves on May 12th and carry a price tag of $549, a rather modest hike over current models which top out at $499 for the 8GB SSD/1GB RAM model.  So what does the extra $50 buy? Quite a lot actually: “The Linux version of the Eee PC will come with a 4GB SSD + an additional 16GB internal flash module for a total of 20GB of storage space.  The Windows XP model — due to the licensing fees associated with Windows — will only feature an internal flash module

Will The Real Psystar Please Stand Up?

Psystar, the maker of the so called “Open Computer” series, is now being actively investigated by various web communities.  One of which has dug up some fairly interesting information:”First, let’s revisit what we already know.  Not only does the Miami Chamber of Commerce and BBB not know anything about any company named Psystar (confirmed by reader [Gizmodo] Travis through his contacts in the chamber), the actual physical address they listed on their website actually changed halfway through the day yesterday.

NBC To Return to iTunes?

At the Ad:Tech conference in San Francisco this week George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer at NBC Universal, discussed their interest in returning to digital distribution via 3rd parties.   They didn’t name any names, but it seems clear that they were talking about Apple because they already distribute digitally and via third parties, but iTunes seems to have gained a lot of momentum. We know that initially Apple and NBC broke off their relationship over pricing issues, but apparently that’s not the only

NVIDIA’s Latest Core-Logic and OC May Not Mix

Not news gamers or uber-geeks are likely to take well, as NVIDIA has admitted that their 790i chipset may cause data corruption if overclocked.Apparently, when computer enthusiasts overclock processor system bus (PSB) and memory clock-speeds on systems that are based on Nvidia nForce 790i-series core-logic, they may experience data corruption on hard disk drives. Earlier end-users complained about the same issue on systems powered by previous-generations Nvidia nForce chipsets.“Nvidia has received reports of
